Get 64bit OS. It cost around the same. No reason not to. Also, the hdd is a bit weak, get a bigger/faster one. It's better to have all components as balanced as possible. --------------- Q6600@3.6ghz, GA-EX38-DS4 X38 chipset motherboard, 8gb 800mhz ddr2 4-3-3-12, 8800GTS(g92)@780mhz, 1TB 7200rpm 32mb cache hdd, 850watt 12v rails=4x20amp powersupply |

Graphics card memory is completely different. The graphics card is basically its own computer. What memory it uses is not relevant to your motherboard selection.

Meh, let it go. It's his machine. Besides, it's easy to put in additional hdds later if he ever needs it. Keep in mind smaller capacity hdds are also slower, even with same cache and rpm specs. More sparse sectors means the pin will have to move a bigger distance across the platter on access. Still, the difference is only a few seconds on loading at most. External hdds have horrible access rates, not good for installed programs, only mass storage. Get internal ones for future upgrades. And yes, onboard graphics memory is independent of main memory in term of speed. It will use total I/O addressing cap though. Doesn't make a difference for 64bit os, of course. Consider a 500gb drive for $79.99. It's the lowest cost per gb, and delivers acceptable performance. 160gb drive has higher cost per gb, not to mention slower. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6822148136 Forget about 10k rpm drive. Solid state drive is coming out, dropping in price rapidly, and far outperforms the fastest 15k rpm drive. Wait a while and get SSD instead. If you have all of that extra external and internal HD, get a 80GB Western digital Raptor. 10000 RPM is never bad. |
