I needed to reinstall Windows XP and now have no sound
on my Dell 8250.

In Device Manager, I have an entry for "Multimedia Audio
Controller" with a yellow question mark next to it.
I tried deleting the entry and letting XP scan for it
again, but it says that it cannot find an appropriate
driver.

I tried downloading the 8250 sound driver (Analog Devices
198X Integrated Audio Driver) from Dell's website, but when
I run the executable, I get "Driver not found! Reboot your
system and try again." When I reboot and try to install
again, I get the same message.

When I look at the Volume tab in "Sound and Audio Devices
Properties", it says "No Audio Device".

When I try to play a Windows sound from the Sounds
tab, it says "Windows cannot play the sound
%systemRoot%\media\Windows XP Error.wav. Your sound
card may be in use."

Any ideas how I can get my sound working?

That's when you should've installed the audio driver, instead of deleting it. Now that you've deleted it (or uninstalled it, from the options it's given me), XP has no idea how to process audio, hence the error:

I'd recommend you download and reinstall the mobo drivers first, then see if it gives you the same "Multimedia Audio
Controller" entry.

If it does, then install the audio driver.

I found the Dell 8250 chipset drivers on Dell's website. Chipset driver is the same as mobo driver, right?

I installed the chipset driver, deleted the Multimedia Audio Controller from Device Manager and rebooted. When the system came back up, it found
the Multimedia Audio Controller again and could not find the right driver
automatically. I then tried to install the audio driver, and get the same
"Driver not found" message as before. Let me know is I did something
out of sequence there.

I was able to solve my own problem. Found a Santa Cruz driver CD that I thought was to
another older machine, but I tried it anyway and it worked!
