I am seeking any and all recommendations
for PalmOS devices that include either
a built-in or an optional MP3 player.

Bonus points will be awarded for tips
and reviews of PalmOS devices that also
support a basic audio recorder and an
FM tuner radio.

Thanks in advance!

My wife has a Palm Tungsten E and is very happy with that. You must
buy an additional memorycard to keep the music.

The mp3-player that comes on a cd when you buy the unit contains the
realone-player for use as mp3-player.

Just got a Zire 72 - which seems to be quite multimedia oriented.
Comes with realplayer built in but I use pocket tunes for the .ogg and
..wma support. Uses SD cards which are available in large sizes cheap
these days.

I've got a Clie that does MP3 and, somewhere along the line, I had a control
module that did FM radio. Played around with it for awhile, but gave up in the
end. With the Clie, one consideration was the proprietary memory card -
although I do have a CF driver for it.

My take: I'm better off with dedicated devices for those two functions. In both
cases the dedicated devices are quite small, relatively inexpensive, and so the
job vastly better than the Clie.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

As you suspect, it is my hope to find a
multifunction device to eliminate the bulk
of two devices. In addition, I also want
the shared utility of the same MEMORY and
BATTERY of a single device to serve both
as a PDA and as a audio player/recorder.

Truth be told, I would truly like to see
these same functionalities (PalmOS PDA &
audio) all combined into one of the many
pocket-sized (yet surprisingly high-end
quality) digital cameras.

I do not know what the true value would be
to the overall market but I could justify
spending the combined costs to obtain the
three different functionalities in a single
package.

And don't forget a cell phone.....

I think such a device is on the way and am just kicking back and waiting.

IMHO a few years should do it....about the time my Clie's screen finally wears
out, I hope..

The biggest problem is power management. While getting everything into
a single device is possible (or close), the problem is that a lot of
times it is in "Name Only" that they are there. The practical side is
that the battery life using the multiple features is just not there, so
it is more like a demo, than real use.

Having said that, I have the Sony Clie TH55, which has the MP3 player
and the voice recorder (NO radio). But it does have WiFi, and the
European model has Bluetooth. It has a lot of other features, and while
this is the last Sony Clie, it has the best power management of any
modern Color Screen PDA I've seen (older monocolor/grayscale PDA did
much better on power as the screens demanded far less in the way of
power, especially if they did not require the backlight to be on for
normal daytime viewing).

Sorry, I missed the original posting.

I just recently got a Palm Zire 31, which is relatively inexpensive for
a PDA. It can function as an MP3 player, and has provision for using an
SD card. Loaded with a 512 MB SD card from Costco, it holds a lot of
music. I haven't tried a rigorous battery test, but it looks like it'll
play for several hours at least without recharging.

At Fry's I saw FM radios designed to plug into a memory slot in place of
the card. I don't know if these will work with the Zire 31 or not -- I'm
sure some of the other folks on this group can tell you. Haven't seen an
audio recorder add-on.

The Zire 31 is turning out to be an excellent fit for my modest
requirements -- mainly as an address book, sometime alarm, and
occasional MP3 player.

Zire 72 would be great as a multimedia palm. Not sure though about the
FM tuner because I never heard of it.

Okay, here's a thought. If your primary need is audio then consider
getting an ipod or a similar device. YOu're more likely to find one
with enormous storage, audio recording, FM radio, and I think the ipod
can do some basic PIM too.

For the mp3/pda/cellphone there are various Treo models.

I have a zire72 that works pretty well with ptunes except not as good a
S/N ratio as my Neuros. You can blank the screen while playing to save
battery, and play in the background while you do other PDA stuff. I
don't have a WiFi card, but it is supposed to play streaming audio
off the internet.

It has a 1.2 MP camera which is a handy accessory, but not a good
substitute for a "real" camera.

It looks as if your wait is over. You can read
the Palm One Treo 650 Smartphone review at:

Enjoy!

It is interesting to note that Sony has
finally announced new music players that
natively support the MP3 format.

Do you think Sony might soon add support
for non-proprietary memory cards?
