Google both cards and look at the benchmarks of the games that you play. Whichever card beats out the other in those games is the one you wanna get.

Here's a build you might want to consider....

CPU: Q9450 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819115042

Motherboard: ASUS P5E Deluxe LGA 775 Intel X48 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131317

Ram: mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820146726

And for your GPU: Since that is a crossfire mobo, crossfirex two of those 4850's and you'll be a happy gamer.

More Information

CPU - Q6600 - $210

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819115017

Mobo - Asus P5Q Deluxe - $210

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131297

Memory - Corsair XMS2 DHX PC6400 4GB - $103

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820145176

That is a difference of $227 dollars on parts so you can get 2 4850s and CF them for a better gaming result. I wen witht the Q6600 because its the best deal on a quad core and it will easily OC to 3GHz no problem (I have one). The mobo uses the P45 chipset which is a great OC'ing chipset and much more stable. That plus the 16 phase voltage regulators will allow more stable and better OCing. The memory because Corsair is very fast and it has a lifetime warranty.

For PSU - Thermaltake 750W PSU $190 bucks

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817153036

this is a good PSU brand and 750W is enough to power that system.

Good luck.

Howdy Jimmy,

I was wondering if the mobo you recommended supports crossfireX at 16x for both PCI lanes? I know it probably doesn't make a whole lot of actual difference as opposed to 8x speed, but its still nice to be able to give them full speed on the lanes. :)

More Information

The CF would be at 8x unfortunately. It would be like having 2 PCIe 1.1 @ 16x though as it is PCIe 2.0.

But if you want 2 full 16x PCIe 2.0 lanes you would have to get a X48 chipset. Thats the only benefit to that chipset over the P45. Other than that the P45 is a much better overclocking and much more stable chipset.

i think crossfire is the way to go for your build, there is less problem with crossfire and you can use a stable intel chipset

ASUS P5Q Deluxe LGA 775 Intel P45 Intel Motherboard $209
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131297

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 $270
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819115043

Patriot Viper 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1200 $75 i would recommend getting 2 pairs for $150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820220282

ASUS EAH4850/HTDI/512M Radeon HD 4850 512MB $195-$30 rebate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814121253

Thermaltake W0106RU 700W $150-$50 rebate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817153039

total = 900
900-80 rebate
total cost after rebates = 820

what is your total build cost?
do you have a harddrive , cd drive, case?
do you plan on oc'ing

i haven't seen any charts to see how much better 16x is then 8x but if its more stable and a better at oc'ing. it seems like you can sacrifice a little performance you'll gain it back in oc'ing. just do lots of research and build something that will suit your needs

You want the full X16/X16 lane speed so....

CPU: Q6600, it is cheap and performs on par with just about everything else, and it allows you to save money. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819115017

Motherboard: DFI Lanparty, good motherboard at a great price, it will serve you well especially if you want to overclock later in life. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813136045

RAM: Patriot Viper 2 x 2GB, good memory good timings, and a good price. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820220293

Get 2 4850s

Power Supply: PC Power and Cooling, this is the absolute best 750w power supply and is not overpriced like the Thermaltake listed above. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817703009

What games will you play, and at what resolution? One of the best guides is guru3d. http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=vga_charts
What I find interesting is that at 1920x1200 a single 9800GX2 or GTX 280 will play any game at over 60fps, which is considered best possible gameplay. I expect that the upcoming 4870X2 will also do it. Why pay more for higher capability? A LCD monitor will have a refresh rate of 60hz(some claim 120hz), but your eye can not detect much over 75hz.
With the lowered prices of the GTX280, I would try that first if you have to buy today. The 4870X2 may well become a better deal by the end of the summer.

At the level of the E8500 or Q6600, the vga card is much more important for gaming than the cpu.
Today, very few games can make use of more than two cores.
Flight simulator X is an exception. It is not a trivial matter to code multi threaded programs,
and game vendors will not sell too many games that require quads to run.
I don't see this changing in the next couple of years, and then nehalem will be upon us.

Net: E8500 for the increased clock speed.

How much overclocking are you planning on doing?
If your going for a high overclock go with the Asus p5q, as its a p45 chipset which is an excellent overclocker.

However if your only going for a low to mid-range overclock I'd get the X38, or X48 chipset mobos that have been recommended, as they will provide your crossfireX setup with its full potential speed, since they'll run both PCIe 2.0 lanes at 16x speed when crossfired.

well pcie 2.0 16x doesn't benefit much from an 8x slot except in flight simulator and call of duty. you might lose around 1-5 fps in most games.

http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 915-9.html
http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 15-12.html

but i will recommend pci 16x over 8x. but like bobfacebilly said if you want to oc go with the p5q and if you want more stable performance

if your planning to oc i wouldn't use a stock fan i dont know if you already have an aftermarket

Here's a x48 that I mentioned earlier, it'll set you back $220, but that is a pretty nice price for one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131317
