If anyone can offer advice or solutions, I'd greatly appreciate it. I have had my vprMatrix Computer for almost 7 years...it has been great--very few problems for the computer's age and the only hardware upgrade I have made is to add LG DVD Burner a couple of years ago. The system came with OEM Windows XP--I just updated all Windows updates and installed Service Pack 3.

have you tried to uninstall sp3? sounds like a driver issue with the new services pack. um and could you clarafy is your SB onboard or does it go in a pci port. you stated that it was on board then you said you replaced it with a different card in the same pci slot. also did you ever think of getting a new computer? 7 years is a long time to go with out a new computer or at lest upgrading. also have you tried googleing your issue. something like: no sound out of soundblaster 5.1. |

The sound card problem was there prior to updating to SP3. I actually updated Windows with SP3 this morning and all of the symptoms that I had in my previous post were evident before the update. Are there known problems with SP3?

Have you updated the 'Intel Chipset Device' software recently? If you haven't, that might be causing you some configuration problems.

Yes, he did do all of that...its in the OP's original post. The thing that I have not seen mentioned from the OP is what might have happened just prior to the sound failing. An update of some type? Since you are using an SB Live! in XP you could try using the venerable and popular KX Project drivers to see if that offers any relief. Some background: http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/index.php?skip=1 ...the drivers themselves: http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/down.php?language=en

Okay, I've download the latest Intel Chipset for the Pentium 4, but how LONG does this usually take to install??? It has been installing now for almost 24 hours...with no apparent end in sight. To answer the other questions, I can't remember any specific update or installation prior to the loss of sound. Just one day, the sound was not there. Sorry that I can't be more specific. I'm also trying the kx Project. Thanks, halcyon. |

try going into your volume control settings, then go to properties, and then in the drop box choose your sound card. It probably is defaulted to the onboard audio. Yeah that's what happened to me one time. Good luck! |

I have no volume control. When I try to play a song in Media Player, it says Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

First, before moving forward, pull the SB Live and put in another computer with XP and see if it works. In other words, make sure the card works. Nothing will help if the card is fried.
