I have a chance to get the QX6850 for $239, currently I have a new E8400 sitting in it's box waiting for my motherboard and video cards to be ordered. Would you buy and use the QX6850 over the E8400 for this price? I am intending to use it on an Asus Rampage, or X38/X48 gigabyte board.

I would get the QX6850 if you can really get it for that price, i just hope you didn't mean E6850. The Rampage Formula is a good mobo. Considering the QX6850 is the extreme edition, it would be easier to overclock with the unlock multiplier.

My choices were QX6850 for $239 or the QX6700 for $199...yes real prices or keep my E8400....I get a special Intel deal yearly. :) For those interest lol my E8400 is up for sale here on the forums under the classified section...$159!!!

If you opt for the quad core over the E8400 then you better have a dam good cooler for it if you intend to overclock as 65nm quad cores are like a furnace. The e8400 will not require as exotic as a cooler and you will be able to attain higher clock speeds.

dbrimberg why the hell would I buy your used E8400 for $160 when you can pick them up new for $200 these days?

I would go with the QX6850, I actually just ordered that from intel today, good deal. Anyone know a good MOBO for these CPU's.

QX6850 all the way. Withe the unlocked multi you can get to 4GHz on air with that 9500 AT and it will run quite cool since you wont have to raise the voltage as much like with a locked multi chip. Seriously QX6850.

dbrimberg....

Your "special intel deal yearly" is nothing special really. tons of people do the retail edge program and have bought the qx6850, qx6700 or the Lenovo Thinkpad.
LOL, don't want to rain on your parade, but you made it sound like you have some kind of hook-up with intel.
I personally ordered the qx6850 and the Thinkpad.... both are being ebay'd. :)
