That MinWin concept sounds really good. Hopefully Microsoft uses that in Windows 7 as the article claims they will.

Its based on the Vista Kernal i read, not MinWin.... Vista ME indeed, if can imagine

actually, current builds are based on a server 2008 kernel. Later builds will be built on whatever updates to the kernel there are.

minwin is more of a side project... it seems.

Looks good so far I suppose. Hopefully it will turn out to be better than Vista, otherwise I'll be using XP longer than I expected.

Those screenshots, while tempting, are way too early in the development process to be anything. They just load the kernel on Vista based GUI for testing. The final product will more-than-likely look nothing like that.

For MinWin, they're basically ripping the guts out of the current Windows kernel and starting from scratch, getting rid of all the bloat.

WinServ '08 uses a kernel called MinWin, which is "similar" in that they reduced the current Windows kernel somewhat, but it is not the same thing they are doing for the Windows 7 kernel, please don't confuse the two.

Where WinServ's MinWin is an apple (kernel) with the skin layer peeled away, the Windows 7 MinWin is nothing but the core of the apple (kernel) with all the juicy, bloated layers thrown away.

Don't forget, keyword for Windows 7 is Modular

I mean Vista images came out early and it ended up looking the same 2 years later...

Vista looked the same through out its beta releases so why cant it not look like it..

Unlike most of you im actually content with vista and quite like, especailly over XP. with vista if you dont like something new, turn it off, ie UAC, the Aero...

Im actually in agreeance, i only recently installed VISTA on my gaming machine (after SP1 came out) and ive had very few problems. My main complaint is that there is no longer an "UP" folder button in Explorer only a "Back". My X-fi works properly (minor crackling due to another issue), and gaming wise its been great. Ive turned all UAC, Aero, Indexing and all the other turf off so im happy.

Im actually looking at installing Server2008 in its command line mode to see how it goes, as its only going to be used for DNS and DHCP initially so it should be interesting.

@Microsoft:

1. Kill the 32-bit, forcing every thing else to be (ie drivers,etc) to be x64.

2. Optimize for Dual/Quad/Hexa(?)/Octa(?) core CPUs.

3. Make installation like a Linux installation, which enables you to take off stuff (ie. help files, games,etc)

4. Make the full-installation small, preferably less tan 2-3GB. Kill all the bloat ware!

5. Tame the UAC.

6. Give users an option between XP/VISTA/2000 look.

7. Don't make more than 4 different versions. (Including a server version)

1. That will kill off alot of users that only have 32bit machines (although scheduled release of 2010 should help that)

3. They used to have this in the Win98 days and got rid of it, kinda sucks not having it there. First thing i do is remove a heap of **** from the install.
4. I dont think there is much bloatware on windows itself, but i dont think 2-3gb is ever going to happen again.

5. True, but it's kind of a "helpful" tool if it works right.

6. Have you used Office 2007? PPl @ my school are going crazy trying figuring out all the new menus. (Thankfully all the shortcut keys still work the same ) imagine what it would do to the mases if they do a completely new GUI.
