Sup all! Got an issue here.. System specs in my sig..

Ok so system is running sweet.. Vista 64 is working great..

I decided to order 2 more gis of ram.. SAME ram I already have in there. $31 bucks cant beat it.

So ram arrives today. I decided to toss em in. I pul 1 stick in. So I had |Old|New|Old|Empty

System is now bluescreening right as Vista starts to load.. I get the Microsoft Vista with loading bar below.. that does not complete come up.. still slightly grayed out than it blue screens. Every single time. Its to fast to read as well.. Now heres whats I have done to try and fix.

I have booted with 1gig at a time all 4 sticks. I have booted 2gigs at a time in slots 1 and 3 as well as slots 2 and 4.

As soon as I toss a 3rd gig in it blue screens.

Now I have installed this update.. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777/
Did not work.

I have tried playing with timings and voltage.. I manualy set timing to 4-4-4-12 and I have also tried setting voltage in ranges from 1.95-2.10 Still nothing
Updated Bios to latest version.. also tried timings of 5-5-5-15.. still blue screening..

To sum up: Ram is good, slots are good.. soon as I goto 3gigs it blue screens.

ANY Ideas are appreciate.. I have even re-intalled vista 64. so...

Would you mind giving the details of the BSOD? Any "missing" files, infinite loops, processes crapping out etc? Also do you have an X-Fi sound card by any chance?

Must have skipped over the "too fast to read" part Boot up with one stick and go to the System Properties - > Startup and Recovery and uncheck "automatically restart".

All the solutions I found on google involved that hotfix you mentioned. Some guy had the wrong one (32 bit instead of 64 bit) and that was causing his problem, so make sure you got the right one Try increasing your MCH voltage by one notch. 3-4 sticks can be straining on the memory controller. I doubt this will solve the problem, but it's worth a shot.

Heres what ive tried so far..

Ok tried the 5-5-5-18,
Tried all settings on the NBridge,
and tried diffrent settings on the Mem Voltage... +/- .15 or so..

Well seeing as you've tried that... hmm. Look in your BIOS for an option that says something like "Memory Remapping" and change it (it's either enabled or disabled) to see if that helps. Beyond that I don't know, I haven't used vista x64 or any more than 2GB RAM.

OK - 4 sticks of RAM is definitely more stressful on your Mobo - Settings for both the memory and board are developed with 2. So you may (obviously, in this case) need to play with it.

Things you should do:
(1) Set all the main timings manually
(2) Set all voltages to max/near max recommended - You can turn these down later if needed. For performance DDR2 800, that's about 2.1v rather than the standard 1.8. So +0.3 on a board with +/- settings.
(3) Ensure the Command Rate is set to 2T
(4) Ensure tREF (or it's equivalent) is set to 54 or greater. Some mobo's don't support a number that high, tho.
(5) If you have a control for vDrop/vDroop, enable it

If needed:
(1) Bump the voltage to your Front Side Buss a notch. Test. Repeat if necessary.
(2) Check your board's maker for an updated BIOS.


The hotfix mentioned is to correct a blue screen on startup with 4GB or more RAm which is associated with certain types of memory controller. If your board doesn't have that controller, then it does you no good. It's incorporated into SP1 anyhow. So if you have that, you haven't actually changed anything.

Pretty sure it's a memory problem, as you state your system runs fine until you add the 3rd stick. Hell, if a half brain dead schmuck like me (just ask the other members here if you want proof!!) can get 8GB of memory running on V64, then it aint' the OS! But in case:

You might have received same bad memory modules.
Try them separately in your system.

I agree with evongugg. Try starting up with one stick and check the dram voltages. Also, try running memtest after you see if one stick can let you boot into windows.

When I put in 4 x 2GB sticks in my 680i A.Striker Extreme I did need that patch, KB929777. On the X48 A.Rampage Formula the patch was not needed. Interesting.

I admit that I've not read the entirety of all the posts before this one but you do have SP1 installed?

A side note, didn't catch what kind RAM you're using but try raising the voltage above 2.1 for 4 sticks. I had to keep my Corsair XMS2 DHX 6400C5 @ ~2.14 when running 4 x 2GB sticks @ 5-5-5-12 @ 840Mhz...just for comparison.

Verify that you have all good ram. Run memtest.
