Is anyone knowledgable regarding SD cards by Matsushita Electronic (the ad
indicated that they were best known for its Panasonic brand name products),
PQI and Toshiba. The price is very attractive but what good is something
if it doesn't work and hold up.

My PNY 256 (which is a Toshiba) has been a work horse; several hours of
recording changed daily... used for mp3 audio books, 25-75% deleted at end
of each day, new material added. Never malfunctions, no problems aside
from needing more capacity.

I've had success with a pair of heavily utilized Panasonic 256s,
although one is a replacement for one that was DOA.

Panasonic SDs are reliable and fast. Infact, they are consistently
the fastest (just do a Google on Panasonic secure digital vfsmark.
Toshiba and Lexars are also good, but not as fast, unless you buy
the high speed 10Mbps ones. Conclusion : Panasonics SD kicks butt.
Highly recommended. And oh yeah, avoid the lesser known brands. YOu
get what you pay for.
