Hi all,

I made a recent purchase of a Palm Tungsten T3 running PalmOS v5.2.1 It
comes with IR support, but strangely enough it cannot establish a connection
with my Dell Latitude 600 laptop running Win2K+SP3 despite the laptop's IR
port does work with my Nokia 6310i cell phone. When I right-click on the
HotSync icon in Windows' system tray and check the "infrared" entry (on in
addition to the yet checked "Local USB" which the craddle uses) I almost
immediately get an failure message inviting me to read a
"\\helpnotes\\IR_readme.text" file which I do not happen to have.

After searching here and there on the web, I found on the microsoft support
website that if IrDA is supported on Win2K, it doesn't seem to support the
IRCOMM programming language (??) -- while Win95/98/Me/XP all do (of
course...). Does the HotSync app' only use this communication mode through
IR ?

Can anyone help me out on how I could enjoy the synch with my laptop through
the IR port (leaving the craddle for evening synch's)

Thanks by advance to your time and dedication,

Regards,

Arnie

Gosh, I just checked: I actually *AM* running Service Pack 4 yet !!

Any one who made a Palm Tungsten work with a Win2000 computer over IR port ?

i use IR with a win2k and T-E

disable the IR print driver in w2k - it "hogs" the IR port. once you have
that done, you should be able to tell hotsync to try to use the IR port as
an option.

you need a version of hotsync that understands a native IR port rather than
wanting a simulated serial port (v4.0+?) - and the equivalent PalmOS of
course - old versions on my Palm V didnt like it.

Well, I've found the perfect solution to this one after having the same
problem with my IBM WorkPad c3 (A Palm V replica).

As I understand it, Microsoft hasn't implemented the irDa protocol
correctly, so devices that speak correct irDa doesn't work - they have
to speak "Microsoft irDa"...

The solution is there in the form of a free program (GNU licence)! Some
nice fellow by the name Jan Kiszka has made a program called IrComm2k
to replace the flawed MS implemetation of IR. Just go to
'http://www.ircomm2k.de/' (http://) download it and install!

Works as a breeze for me now to sync my Palmtop with my notepad.

Hope this works for you too.

Thanks for the support, George !

That's a recommendation for rather drastic change ! Wow !

It happened that yesterday I was trying to find some more hints on
this issue and found a post 18months old in another NG with a very
similar problem (but another Palm model) and it recommended something
that worked for me ! See the steps:

-> Control Panel
-> WireLess link (I believe this component got installed when I
installed the Nokia Data Suite 3.0 for my Nokia 6310i mobile phone,
which indeed exploits to IR port to be managed by the Data Suite)
-> Image Transfer tab
-> uncheck seeting "Use Wireless Link to transfer images from a
digital camera to your computer"

...and that's it !!! The IR port now works fine to HotSync my Palm
Tungsten T3 with my Windows2000 laptop, despite poor/lack of support
of IRCOMM !

Pass the word...

Thanks a lot again for your attention and dedication !

Arnie.

Thank you very much for your post, Seaman/Thomas.

I would have tried it but... as I now said in a previous reply here

Thanks again Thomas, cheers !
