Q6600 2.4GHz $249
Q6700 2.66GHz $539

$290 more for 0.26GHz

makes no sense

Anyway I heard that April 20th the Q6600 drop to $224 & the Q6700 drop to $266

Because people are foolish enough to buy it. Get the Q6600 with a P35 mobo and you get a free OC to 3G i.e., no increase in voltage.

higher multiplier. overclocking ability has more options. thats all.

The Q6700 is 10% faster and does that without overclocking. This means you get the additional speed and still keep the warranties and don't need to know how to overclock. It's good for less technical people or for corporations who want to minimize IT headaches. For example where I work they bought me a new machine with a Q6700 last year.

Hmm, I thought the Q6700 was supposed to be around $270 by now?

The Q6700 is the exact same hardware as G0 stepping Q6600, just running at higher clock. You can think of this as factory overclocking, which is identical to do-it-yourself overclocking. :p

because Intel has never been shy about the fact that they will ass-rape anybody they can whenever they can (just like the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition for over $1000), but for some reason people still buy their stuff.

Meh, if boneheads have money, let them spend it. Stimulates the economy. :na:

I would rather invest the $290 in something else

If the price goes down & its only $30-$50 more then that would make since.

In this situation it is not the same as "do it yourself overclocking with a warranty". The q6700 has a speed of 10 x 266mhz = 2.66 ghz, while the multiplier on the q6600 is 9 (9 x 266 = 2.4 ghz). One cannot raise the multiplier on a non extreme edition, so one cannot get a multiplier higher than 9 on a q6600. All this means is the q6700 has more overclocking options to play with than the q6600, not worth the extra money with the q9450 out.

You don't need to change the multiplier to OC the Q6600 as far as it will go. 3G at 1333 and 3.6 @1600. That only requires DDR2 800. If you want to go all out then 4.5G @ 2000 which requires DDR2 1066. I don't think anyone is running 4.5G so why do you need to change the multiplier? Right, you don't and the whole pay more than double for 266Mhz to get a higher multiplier is BS.

The extra 266Mhz isn't even worth the money if your not OCing, it's just not a big enough difference.

More Information

Zorg is correct it comes down to people with more money than brains dropping the cash for a marginal increase in performance.

More Information

The bleeding edge of performance always costs more than the benefits received.

Oh, and there are fewer and fewer units sold out on the bleeding edge.

BTW, to some of us the Q6600 is becoming long in the tooth, time to upgrade the CPU kind of chip. To mainstream office computers the Q6600 is out there on the bleeding edge.

More Information

Great, but an additional 266Mhz isn't even really noticeable and the Q6700 is far from bleeding edge.

Q6600 isn't even fully utilized yet. It's certainly not the new shiny, but it's far from long in the tooth.

More Information

In THG's system builder marathon, the q6700 did not overclock more than 3.7Ghz... and that was on liquid cooling!! Even they came to the conclusion that the trusty q6600 can overclock to same speeds... Hell I had mine running on 3.6 on air!!! (the same speed, they finally settled on for the q6700).. The extra multiplier does squat!

Why so SeRiOuS?
More Information

Pricing schematics are the loopholes that makes the company that extra add on money they wouldnt have gotten otherwise. You would be surprised how many people out there with deep deep deep pockets and little sense to recognize the marginal difference. Their salesman says this is the faster chip and they buy it.

Any company will have products used for that purpose and if it sells it sells and if they sell the Q6600 instead then thats one less AMD chip purchased and they still win.

Its just smart marketing for the company. A senseless waste of money to enthusiasts unless you like throwing money around. And a faster chip for that unknowing customer that gets taken for a ride.

Good thing I only paid $240 for my Q6700, a DG33TL (I'm not using), and Vista Home Premium (which I sold for $100). After I sell the motherboard for $60, I'll have paid $80 for my Q6700. Not too shabby.
