Start ... Run ... winver

Will tell you as it say x64 Edition on the graphic at the top.

The fact then when you machine boots it says x64 Edition in big letters
under the Windows XP logo can also be a give away - you will of curse have
to restart your PC and watch it to notice this.

Hi Erick,

Most run the 32-bit (x86) edition, including those that have 64-bit capable
hardware.

Almost certainly, anyone who has to ask is running the 32-bit
version. Both the 64-bit version and the hardware needed to run
it cost more, and it's unlikely that someone would have both of
those without realizing it.

If your XP is a boxed version it is 32bits. 64bits is only available
preinstalled on your computer. You cannot buy it retail. In other words,
if you did not order your computer with 64bit Windows, you are running
32bit.

While I agree that the OP would likely know if he has a 64bit OS you can see
that the cost of hardware isn't much of an issue. As low as $600 for a
system and the OS is free if you own XP Pro with an upgrade available from
Microsoft.

You're welcome Ken. Just a year ago the only way to get a 64bit OS was
preinstalled on a server system with an Itanium processor. The cost was
around $2000+ for an entry level system. But since AMD came out with their
64bit processor costs have really come down and MS now makes the OS
available to the home user market - if you want it. I recently popped a low
end motherboard and AMD 64bit processor in one of my test systems. The cost
of the board and processor was well under $300. The basic problem now has to
do with 64 bit driver availability and some system level software. There is
no packet writing software that works with 64 bit (although that is no loss)
and the only AV outside of Symantec Corporate 10 is the latest version of
Avast!

But you still don't just get x64, you have to work at it to get it. Whether
through the TAP, buying preinstalled from an online PC builder, or whatever,
it just doesn't show up on your system. I think someone running x64 has to
know very well he is running it. Just my two cents.
