I know intel will not support Octal core on LGA775. So no upgrade for me in the future.

Is AM2+ the safest root to Octal core CPU in the future?

It should, although I don't have official announcement to back that up.

However, why do you need 8 cores? Unless you do a lot of video rendering and encoding, having more than 2~4 cores is practically useless.

AMD told that phenom X8 will be two Phenom X4 glued. If the HT isn't the problem why didn't they do 2 Athlon X2 to make  X4 and waited more then a year for K10 ?

From what I know so far, it would be very difficult for AMD to come up with a MCM, a.k.a glued, version of K10 octa core. However, it takes a lot less time to glue two dies together than come up for a brand new monolithic die, so MCM approach still makes sense.

I want 8 cores for Photoshop and 3d. Im sick and tired of clicking ona filter, going to make a coffee, weld a frame, install an engne, testdrive to Edmonton, spend the night at a strip joint, come back and still watch that freakin hourglass! :)

you mean 4 cores are not good enough for porn..........

8 cores would certainly make up for it .....

What really peeves me off is why does Apples get all the 8 cores first, i mean its like how many people use apples now any way  - 10......

PCs would sell far many 8 core processors that any apple would........

and any how amd can get 4 cores going, this is there second attempt if im right and they cocked this one up too, The last one costing more than Austrailia and the second having more dents than Steve Irwins ghosts ego....

Hellboy, pron is a prerequisite to any system configuretion. First you check how well it can display full screen Vivid Video at 2560x1920 while encoding Jenna Jameson's Greatest Hits in the background and downloading the entire month's vids from Youpron.com. If it pases that test, then you can go onto boring crap like Photoshop.

Why does Apple get the pick o' the chipz? Easy. They put them into systems that they make a 150% profit on. Money talks and B.S. walks, dude. :)

There is no reason to look forward to getting a 8 core processor. As of now there is no reason to get a quad, unless you are doing video encoding and 3D development. Most people just use their PC for games or random Internet or e-mail tasks, which can all be done using 2 or less cores. So until games or most programs start supporting multi-core technology, it's not much to look forward to.

yeah, an octuple core won't really make a difference, nor even in games. But yeah, I do video editing and encoding (its my job actually in my case).
What about X6 two triple core. That could be interesting if its on a budget.

Still, AMD needs to enlighten the solo-core by making it faster and faster and more power efficient so the multiple cores gets more respect.

I'm not quite so sure. Ok most people don't use any apps that use 2 or 4 or even 8 cores but....
Family computer... Norton (spawn of the devil) gobbles one. pre installed junk from Dell/HP takes another. Little johnnies P2P and F@hime takes another.
Now what happens when bigger brother wants to start up crysis etc.
Ok this might not be that realistic but you get the idea.
It's not just the multicore apps that will give advantages, as long as the PC has enough memory.

It would be so sweet to have the choise between :   Phenom X4-X5-X6-X7-X8

Just think of the way they can adjust price points to the number of cores you have.
Plus cpus that have a bad  core can still be used.
Our current system of setting multipllier fixed to 8-9-10-11- and set pricepoints acording to it is stupid.
All cpus need to be open multiplier and thus overcloking is done more easy. Price will be by the number of cores.

Yes it sounds great, an X5 would be an X2+X3 or two X3 with one core being faulty. "no core is left behind"
everything-is-usable approach.

According to the roadmap I saw, beginning next year the AM3 boards will be released which will probably be just in time for the 8 core Phenom chip and for the 45 mm chip.

Next year as in 2009? That's a long time to wait for a company which is on the ropes.

why does everyone assume everyone does nothing but gaming and email? christ, i can tell you flatout there's a good reason i have a dual core, had it when they came out. i will get a quad next. i will use it. i bias my build more towards the cpu than the gpu because i do lots of different stuff at once.

Word!, I often wonder myself why everyone thinks that everyone else is a gamer or overclocker, I'm a casual gamer myself, I play maybe 20 hours a month instead of 85 hours straight like that headcase is south korea(may he rest in peace).  and I have a small overclock.

Yeah, I can't even call myself a gamer really right now.  I don't think I've played more than 20 hours myself in the last month.  More of an electronics geek or enthusiast.  But, when I build a rig I am not going to go all out to try and get the highest frame rate possible.  I go for the most stock performance I can get for my money, for the kinds of things I do on a regular basis.

And besides, GPU dictate FPS more in games than anything.  And it will be that way till games start to optimize for multiple cores and threads.  But as it is right now, most people don't even use both cores on a dual core, let alone that much of a quad.

I'll admit that I used to spend hours a day, playing online games like EVE, or Guildwars though.  EVE's New graphics engine can actually push modern video cards, have to watch how much is going on with my 2600xt, and I still can't have it at max settings.  Not to mention FPS's like Unreal Tournament, Doom3, Halo.  Other games like Civ 4, lol I think they should make a benchie for performance in that game, one that measures wait time between turns, love watching the CPU usage on my x2 4200EE jump during the AI turns.

Granted I was amazed how well Command and Conquer Generals:Zero hour started to run after I upgraded to the X2 from the XP.  Use to have problems with the game choking the system after a long run in the game due to high numbers of units.

But, I do almost everything on my computer.  Burn CD's DVD's, encode from video files to DVD's.  Even do my own lightscribe labels.  I even slipstream my windows xp install discs every time there are enough updates to warrant it.  I'm even thinking about finding a way to transfer my old VHS movies to DVD, just need to find a way to do it.. I have some  movies that you won't ever see on DVD, the THX Version of the old star wars trilogy.

I do VHS to DVD convertion. Its my job, and quite easy one. it could be easier if I had 2 video inputs to capture 2 vhs at the same time, but despite having another capture card, as they are the same chipset, the drivers overwrites over the other device. Damn...
