Thread : After formatting I no longer see the entire drive.

More Information

I bought a new 120Gig hard drive for me laptop. I formatted the drive reducing the size to 55 Gigs.
The drive formatted but I no longer see the rest of the drive.
I have tried to delete the partition but (after the partition is deleted) the drive just displays 55 Gig.
I can’t even see the drive in explorer. I have to go to Disk Management (In XP) to see the drive.
I lost the rest. Is there a way to retrieve the rest of the drive?
Thanks. :fou:

You have to create a new partition in the remaining space and format that.

More Information

There is no remaining space. It is like the new 120 gig drive is only 55 gigs. The rest of the drive is just gone.

If Windows XP Disk Management fails, maybe you can try the GParted Live CD:

You don't mention HDD MFG or OS. However, it doesn't matter much, whatever OS you are using do a complete format, not just a 'quick' format. Also most HDD MFG's will have tools on their website that may help in these tasks.

You should absolutely see "Unpartitioned space" in disc management under administrative tools. You mean it shows the full physical drive at 55 Gigs, and NO additional space? It should show the full PHYSICAL drive, not just the formatted parts.

That's more likely than only seeing a 120 gig drive as a 60 in Disk Management.
