I'm no computer expert so I hope I am not too vague.
 
But my problem is that nearly all games freeze/lock eventually after playing, sometimes I can play longer and sometimes not.
Everything works and looks just fine until that moment, then the sound will begin to loop and the screen freezes. The game doesn't crash or anything. There are no graphical glitches or problems with anything else before or after that freeze/lockup and often if I have the patience I can alt+tab out of that game even after the lock and close the game, it just takes quite a while.
 
The computer is quite new and everything should work. I have all the latest drivers installed (I think) and I shouldn't have any viruses or such. So basically everything should work, and most of the time everything does work. But a day doesn't go by when I could play without at least a single freeze/lockup.  
Some say it could be my power supply (all I know it's 500w and it was quite cheap, not sure where to find all the other details about it) and some say it's my memory, I have no idea but I'd like to know bit more before I take the computer to some computer store for them to look at.

List your rail amps from the power supply label, plus the brand. Do you have any case fans installed for improved airflow?

Can you post some temperature readings from your cpu and graphics card? Your problem could be heat related.

I lack a case fan at the moment (still on my "to get" list) but it doesn't seem to be overheating at least. Nothing ever gets too hot, or so it feels.
 
I downloaded PCWizard and here's some temperature stuff from it. And this is when nothing was running but the PCWizard and Firefox. Doesn't look too bad to me.

It's all gibberish to me, but I hope it makes some sense to you.  
       

I get graphic lockups on games as well. They are random and not real frequent - maybe 1 every hour or two. I have scoured the web for answers and have found none. None of the usual suspects seems to be the culprit:
 
1) the CPU is not overclocked
2) using a high quality PSU
3) no overheating issues
4) GPU is not overclocked
5) RAM is good and passes memtest
6) Have latest drivers
7) you name it - I've probably tried it or got it
 
I think it's either a fundamental problem with the 8800 series or with high-end RAM. I see scores of forums stating the same problem as above - yet there are also probably many that don't have this problem. The most logical answer I've heard so far is that the lockup might occur because of a conflict between mobo and GPU RAM. In any event, I don't think there is a magic bullet remedy at this point. The latest advice I saw was to try reducing DDR2 speeds from 800 to 667, loosen timings (5-5-5-15), and slightly increase DDR voltage. I'm trying that now and will see how it goes.
