Ok, I'm not exactly sure how to explain what I'm looking for... but I'll try.

I've noticed that media card reader that is built into my laptop (Dell XPS M1710) doesn't create a drive letter and populate the hardware device until a card is inserted. I'd like this functionality in a 3.5" or a 5.25" drive bay that connects via internal USB.

I currently have an Adaptec floppy / media card reader combo (which appears to be a Y-E Data product, with an Adaptec price tag). My gripe with this model is that I'm stuck with 4 "Removable Storage" drives all the time, whether there's a card inserted or not. I can't tell which is which.
