Hi, I have recently earned quite a bit of moeny and am looking to buy a
handheld. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for the current
most powerful handheld on the market, and whether it is worth waiting for
something that is due to be released immenently or whether it will be a
while before the 'next round' of handhelds is released. Thank you.

I should add, I am particularly interested in devices that have a 4"
high-resolution display (I believe this means 640x480?). I'm not sure if any
are on the market yet, but devices like the iPAQ hx4705 market this feature.
I was wondering if there are any already available.

None of those have 640x480 screens though, are there any PDAs available that
have this feature?

To answer the question of whether it is worth waiting for "the
next round" of products, the question is whether you have anything
for which you want to use the product. Ie: What do you want to do
with it? If you are just going to sit it on your dresser and look
at it every now and then and say "Gee, that looks really nice sitting
on my dresser instead of the pile of money I had," then by all means
buy the iPAQ, or anything else for that matter. It will not make
any difference at all which one you buy. On the other hand, if you
want to *save* money, then buy a cheap bottom line Palm Zire and
try it out. Either it will do everything you want and you will be
happy, or you will have a better idea of what you want to do which
that cheap product does not do, and you can buy something that fills
your needs -- and depending on what you find out that you need,
buying 2 products may end up costing you less than "the most powerful
handheld on the market."

The Sharp Zaurus SL-6000 series has had that size and resolution
screen for a while now, but it is not generally sold to "consumers".
In fact, it seems to be difficult to get them at all. The theoretical
problem I see is that it uses a very small pixel size. Such screens
can be difficult to use without backlight, even in daylight
conditions. This is a problem I have seen on some cheaper Sony
devices. That means the battery will be heavily used and will run
down relatively quickly. That can bother some people who use their
handhelds a lot each day. I have not used a Zaurus SL-6000 nor the
iPAQ 4700 series yet so I do not know whether this is a serious
problem with either product -- I am only warning you that this
is a problem that I would look for before buying.

I was a bit disappointed that Sharp is charging so much for the Zaurus SL-6000.
I get impression that Sharp is not serious about marketing the SL-6000
