Outside of hurting AMD, I think this is also a sign that they are looking to release the penryn sooner than expected. At least that's my wishful thinking

Even if AMD does not release on time, a Price cut just before the release would not only Hurt AMD, but would sway a lot of people from buying the new Barcy, especially beings AMD is being so tight lipped about its performance.

Coup De Tat, really, hurt AMD financially and in the Market Share.

Unfortunately, for YOU and ME, this isn't good. If AMD goes down, Intel CPU prices go straight up, and innovation becomes stagnant again.

Oh, I understand that completely and personally I would be more than happy if AMD's new chips came out and kicked Intel's Core 2 Duo and even Penryn for that matter, right in the nutz.

Though I'm not so gloom and doom about things (yet). I think Intel is going to enjoy 2 years of rule, just like AMD as enjoyed 2 years of top dog status. It's just a cycle of things. At least, I hope it's just a cycle.

As a consumer, I'm greedy and selfish, I want AMD, Intel, nVidia, ATI (whoever) to slug it out and an eternal battle, has it will always mean better and cheaper products for me.

As a realist, I don't think AMD's latest offering is going to be all that great. So I'm hoping that by the time I'm ready to do my 2 year upgrade that I'll be able to grab the Pernyn now, instead of a Quad today and a penryn tomorrow (which isn't all that bad if the socket types stay the same)

Yeah its true man, Intel did bounce back as if just bouncing... But AMD suffered from financial issues and got a hard time also.. Considering they now have a descrete graphics segment to look at, they are left with a lot of things to do... While sailing the rough seas, they hit also shallow waters... I can't speculate on when are they gonna catch up the heat again...

That article is written by somebody who should really stick to non-technical issues. Anyway, this paragraph:

is about the Q6600 price cut (from $530 to $266 on July 22), and it's ancient news. Also, it's silly because Q6600 does not run in either servers or the most expensive personal computers, that's what Xeon and QX6700/QX6800 are for.

The real news is the Core 2 Duo cuts on Sep 2 but they don't say which models. I doubt X6800 will be included, Intel doesn't seem to ever cut prices on "extreme" models. TBH why should I care, I'm getting a quad

Right. The good news is, if AMD gets in really big trouble somebody with deep pockets will step in, buy them, and keep the fight going. They'll do this to grab the patents and the smartest employees and to expand in new fields where there's growing potential. Companies like IBM and Microsoft spring to mind...
