Hi ng,

I have just placed an order for TomTom Navigator 5 Bluetooth GPS which
I will be using in conjunction with my iPAQ h4150. I was wondering if
anyone using a similar setup can comment on speaker volume? Do you
think I really need a powered speaker solution or the sound system of
my iPAQ would be able to deliver reasonable output under normal driving
conditions?

Any comments much appreciated.

Thanks,
Cristian

It depends on how much ambient noise there is in your car, it's workable but
better with amplification.

Hi Darren,

Thanks a lot for responding.

I drive a VW Golf 2002. While it might not be the quietest car around,
especially at over 120 Km/hour, it could be worst. Do you mean by
"ambient noise" the car itself or whether or not you have the radio on,
kids screaming, people talking etc? I was wondering if I can clearly
hear the instructions while none of that is going on -- just the
"normal" car noise while traveling.

I was looking at proclip and their powered system is some $60 US more
expensive than the passive holder.

Thanks,
Cristian

I have a Brodit amplified holder (ProClip) for my 2210 and it works well.
However I tend to use my XDAII these days and this does not have an
amplified mount.  I can hear the instructions fine, they wouldn't be very
clear if audible at all over a loud stereo but in an otherwise quiet car
perfectly adequate.

If you can, get a ProClip, they're by far the best PDA cradles available bar
none and their amplified version works very well if you can justify the
additional cost.

Thanks a lot Darren for the link, I will go over it just as I finish
writing this.

I have my eye on a ProClip cradle, just a matter of selecting the
powered vs non-powered one. As I see it, I will test out the TomTom
Navigator 5 when I get it and if I feel there's a need for additional
volume, I will get the one with the amplifier, no question.

Reading some reviews, it seems that the TT Nav 5 might have enough
juice, remains to be seen I guess: "As with previous TomTom products,
voice instructions are clear and concise using Ogg Vorbis files that
have been designed especially for loud vehicles.".

I still have a couple of questions, maybe you can help me here too.

1.  GPS signal
---------------------
The TomTom Navigator 5 I got uses a Bluetooth GPS receiver. I was
wondering if the signal is good enough so that the receiver can be
located anywhere in the car, or does it need to stay on the dashboard
or close to the rear window?

2. There are 2 different Brodit mounts that I can consider but need a
bit of help with this.

A. Center Mount
http://tinyurl.com/cdte6

OR

B. Angled Mount
http://tinyurl.com/d2pjf

With these mounts, being located at quite different spots in the car, I
wonder what would be the best option in terms of getting optimal
visibility while taking into consideration factors such as: natural
viewing position while driving (aka, with an angled mount, do I need to
constantly look up and down wile driving?), best location/angle for the
screen itself in terms of getting the best resolution (I guess
technically resolution is a constant, but I guess you know what I mean
;-( ) during day driving, etc.

Thanks,
Cristian

It will easily communicate via Bluetooth from anywhere inside your vehicle

Both those are for aTouareg, I though toy mentioned a Golf?  Either way you
want it as high as possible to avoid having to look down.  Get a mount that
is near the top of the console if possible.

Definitely that one over the lower con sole option which is better suited to
a cellphone. Although that's for a Passat, the other you linked to was for a
Touareg and I though you drove a Golf??

Thiis is the Golf one for a 2005 Model, direct from www.proclipusa.com:

Thanks for your advise Darren. I was too thinking that the center mount
is better.

I wanted to include the link for the mounts but on proclipcanada.com
what happens is that as you click away selecting different mounts the
URL in the browser does not change, it remains
http://www.proclipcanada.com. So I just did a blind search and came up
with the Passat one :-)

What I would of liked to see, would of been an extended mount (for 2
devices) housing the PDA as well as the bluetooth. I know it is
bluetooth and does not need to be close to the PDA, but still if I need
to charge the GPS at the same time with the PDA I would not have to
keep the GPS on my dashboard and falling out at the first curb. Also, a
dual cigarette plug would have been nice, but I guess I can buy those
separatelly. It's just the mess of having to keep the GPS on the
dashboard or console and the messy wires I am thinking about.

Thanks,
Cristian
