Hey guys 2 years ago I got a HP Pavilion zd8000 laptop before I got to college. I love the mobility, but now its obvioiusly outdated and I was wondering if it is worth upgrading or if I should sell it and build a tower with a lot more power.

I wouldn't call it outdated for "normal" use. Replacing one of the 512MB RAM modules with a 1GB module to have 1.5GB total will definitely help in running Windows, and should be fairly cheap. Upgrading to a 7200rpm drive will help noticeably, but isn't cost-effective. A CPU upgrade is not practical on almost all notebooks. You might be able to "upgrade" the graphics with a plug-in card, but that is likely to be prohibitively expensive, too.

Not too bad of a laptop there. Is the laptop not zippy enough for ya? If your looking to upgrade a a little I would upgrade the memory first and then maybe the hard drive to 7200rpm one. Other than that, you might be better off selling it for what you can and buying a newer one. I would look at maybe an ASUS brand laptop or maybe something else. I'm currently using a Dell e1505 that I bought last year and it's been good so far. I'm not against Dell, but alot of people don't like them. I got this laptop because it was the cheapest that I could find with the items that I wanted (Core Duo, 1gig DDR2 533 RAM, bluetooth, wireless a/b/g, Dvd burner, lots of USB 2.0 ports, ATI x1400 video <---wish I could have better). I paid around $1k for this setup with a nice backpack that I can even put the xbox 360 into it with the laptop! So if your thinking you want some pep in your current system than go with the memory upgrade and/or the hard drive upgrade, otherwise just clean up and sell it and buy a new(er) one.
