Forum Linux/Free BSD : General Discussion Mods locking threads and selecting best answer?

Firstly I should thank the moderators of this section for removing a recent spammer and also for trying to keep the place in order. On the whole good work by all concerned and much appreciated.

One thing that I have noticed recently is that a lot of threads are being locked. I logged on this evening to see at least 7 of these. I also see the best answer being selected by one of the mods on a few of them. Many of the threads in question appear to be a few months old so I'm wondering why this is being done, I'm also wondering why best answers are being selected by a mod and not by the OP. It just doesn't seem to be in keeping with the rest of the forums. To my mind it clutters up the forum and also stops people from following up on threads or asking for clarifications if they have similar problems, this means more threads when it might make more sense to continue the discussion in an old one. As for the selection of best answers this runs the risk of favouritism accusations against the mod in question, not a concern to me as I know they all love me :kaola:

I think it's probably an attempt to fix the issue of insane zombie threads that seem to plague (no pun intended) this board. I've seen multi-year old threads replied to with meaningless posts more times than I'd like to count. I do agree that is clutters things up a tad however.

To be honest I don't really like closing threads, but I cannot be bothered to dig up months old threads to close. We as mods are supposed to give people best answers for points reasons and the such.

Threads are supposed to be closed a few months after the last post.

In all honesty, I would prefer to see people pointlessly reply to threads afterwards. After all they are warned by that pointing pop-up thing. I agree with the afformented arguments.

I agree -- it appears this recent occurrence is arbitrary on the parts of the mods but is probably coming down from on high. Even volunteers have bosses.

Often threads are locked after they have been spammed and the spam removed (which makes it difficult to see why they were locked). I can see the reason for that, but I'm not so keen on the mod selecting Best Answer. That should, IMO, be up to the OP.

An unfortunate side effect of a thread being locked in this way is that it then appears at the start of the list of threads, which is particularly distracting when a number of threads have been locked. It would be nice if there were some way to avoid this noise in the system.

Maybe as the regulars we should make efforts to bump up threads that get knocked out by the locking. Frequently it's clear that additional information is needed even if you've not got an actual solution to the question.

The spam thing is something we'll always have to deal with. Some of my comments appeared a little strange after a recent clear out, I'll make an effort to report rather than do the exposure thing in future to help the cause.

I'd be interested to have a clarification from MM on this recent batch though. If it was a request from higher powers then it's something we need to take up in the feedback sections and also see if we can spot in other sections of the site.

It seems to have been happening in all of the forums that I look at. Normally I scan all of the chamged posts in a number of forums. Lately I've just been scanning down to the first locked one and ignoring the rest; it's just too much hard work wading through all the locked threads to find any real changed ones.

Well if you want I can apply for an exemption.

It's actually more of a problem with some of the other forums. The ideal would be if a mod could lock a thread without it then appearing to be a newly changed thread. Then it would remain in its current position and quietly fade away.

I think I appreciate why this is being done - to stop the resurrection of ancient threads, mainly by spammers. But, unfortunately, the result is that a lot of threads that would otherwise have remained dormant are being resurrected this one time. It seems the cure is worse than the disease.

A time lock on posts over one month would be a neat answer, save the mods from having to do so much work too.

The thing is that software doesn't really go out of date that quickly. I mean like we still get Ubuntu 10.10 questions. Perhaps the OP ends up with an issue none can solve and someone does at some point. Be good for the rest of the internet to post it.

I would prefer to deal with necros on a case to case basis. Besides you do get warned!!
