Hi,

Recently, my laptop running Ubuntu Linux started taking a considerably longer time to boot. If the boot was successful, which is sporadic, I find that my desktop is almost completely missing, and I can't do anything.

These problems started occuring after I recently updated it, though I might think that this could be a hardware problem instead.

Please help.

Probably an update problem.

Thanks

I litterally couldn't do much of anything. Luckily, I had my important documents and such backed up, so I just reinstalled ubuntu and everything is working again.

So my last question is: Is there anythink I should keep in mind before I update my machine? I'm kinda new to ubuntu.

I say it like this: If everything works, don't update it.

Ubuntu uses Debian's unstable branch of updates, therefore the updates aren't as bad as a beta, but they are not as well tested as Debian's stable branch. If you update Debian on the stable branch, you can be pretty sure it won't break anything.

Alright, I'll keep that in mind.

Thanks!

If you wish it may be an idea to use a distro such as CentOS or Debian or Ubuntu LTS (long term support). These distros spend more time perfecting the software.

Personally I used Fedora 15, but when I updated to Fedora 16, it broke my computer's hotkeys and I could not close the lid or the computer died. So I reinstalled Fedora 15 and kept using it without updates. I might need to install CentOS because Fedora 15 support cycle is 13 months long.
