I think there is a Linux version of Skype.
Not many Windows games work.

Actually, there are a lot of windows games that work on Ubuntu linux. You need to start the "Ubuntu Software Center" from the menu. Then search for "wine" which stands for wine is not an emulator. In wine you can then install most of the popular windows games. To help with this, there is also a program called "playOnLinux" which you can download from here...
http://www.playonlinux.com/en
This program configures wine to run with many windows programs that is may be more difficult to get to run on wine. Mentioning difficulty, you can get better at running windows programs on wine as there are lots of tweaks to it that you can manipulate in it's user friendly gui. To find out if and how well a particular program works on wine, there is a website found here...
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectMana [...] n&iId=2890
that will tell you the review of many games running under wine. This site is however not the final say in it, because many people can get the games to work and never log into the site to report that they have. To go further than this, you may want to google the keywords, "wine" and "the name of the game you want to run" to see if other sites report better results and how they got them.
Further more, I would like to inform you that because of wine, linux is actually more compatible with windows games, than windows itself, for the reason that windows xp is only compatible with games made for windows xp and windows 7 is compatible only with games made for windows 7. Wine however is compatible with most of the popular games, from dos, to windows 3.1, to windows 7.
In addition to this, you can also play old dos games with free software you can also find in the "Ubuntu Software Center". You can find these programs under the key words "dos". In particular the two I like best are "DosBoxEmulator" and "DosEmulator".
Also many games which were made for Window and even macontosh some years ago have been released and made compatible with linux itself, and do not require wine or dos at all. You will stumble upon some of these as you begin looking for games.
Lastly, don't forget about my site..
http://www.dotdeb.com
Here there are many remakes of windows and macontosh games as well as many other unique games packaged specifically for Gnome Ubuntu Linux.
