Hey all. Long time reader first time poster. I've come across scattered articles on modifying and running server 2k8 as a vista-esque desktop OS. Essentially vista with better performance; Windows Server 2008 Workstation Converter tool basic 2k8 desktop setup guides; slashdot article;
Thanks in advance for any advice and comments.

o0 ty for the link. Most of his points do seem to be cost related thought. If you happen to have MSDN access that's kind of a moot point. (As he duly notes).

Server editions usually have higher security than desktop editions... so right there you have a huge pain in the @$$. It just seems like a lot of effort for little or no gain. --------------- Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit; Intel Q6600 CPU; E-VGA 780i SLI motherboard; E-VGA E-GeForce 8800GT; OCZ Vista 4GB dual-channel kit; Ultra X2 750W power supply; 2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB in RAID 0. |

Vista works fine, just tweak the settings on it, get your updates and you'll be set. |

Vista loses 5-10% of system resources compared to XP, and runs slower than XP on the same hardware. (This however, was true of 95->98, 98->XP, so meh).

Extra security usually isn't a bad thing... but when you have Windows constantly nagging you about installing this or that... going to certain webpages... asking you for a reason to shut down or restart... then it's a pain. Of course, I'm sure you have most of those disabled anyway.
