Well I did a fresh install of XP and I couldnt connect to the internet. I finally figured out that I had to : right click on My Computer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services

I saw that most of the services had not started, such as Application Layer Gateway Service, Automatic Updates, Com+ Event System, DHCP client, Network Connections, Simple TCP/IP services, Windows Installer, Windows Firewall/ICS service, etc, etc. I dont even know which of these services should be started and which shouldnt be as im no expert on windows services.

When I started the services, I could get on the internet.

The problem is that every time I reboot Windows these services again do no start and I am forced to manually start them myself which is a huge pain. I have tried going into dcomcnfg and making sure SYSTEM has full control of COM security Permissions. That didnt solve the issue.

It also doesnt matter if the Startup Type is manual or automatic.

I am very frustrated with this computer. I have spent many hours trying to get it to work properly after my fresh XP install, and I never had these problems before the new install.

Does anyone here know how to get these critical windows services to start on their own... I'm not inclined to simply leave my computer running 24/7.

It sounds like something went wrong with the install. Since it is a new install I would just do it again. I dont know why these thing happen and apparently neither does Msoft but that would be the easiest thing to do.
Otherwise you could try a repair install from the same disk.
If it is a OEM disk dont register it until everything is working correctly.

If you already downloaded drivers and support progs like acrobat reader and flash etc just dump them to a cd and then you will always have them.

If you dont want to reinstall windows you could try going to control panel add/remove programs/windows components and see what is or isnt installed and install most components from there. I dont know if all will be there though.
Most components come from various selections eg most of the things you have listed eg. internet connection will install Automatic Updates, Com+ Event System, DHCP client, Network Connections, Simple TCP/IP services, Windows Installer, Windows Firewall/ICS

Iam experiencing the same problem. I just reinstalled the OS with no other apps. Service just don't start up on their own.

Any other ideas?

You have NIC drivers installed and they are working properly? Windows may not start the services if it doesn't detect a working NIC.
