According to TGDaily, and considering that your hard earned money is involved, I would recommend you read this article if you are planning to downgrade to Vista anytime soon. If you were considering buying Vista, maybe you should consider holding off and save your cash until the new OS is released.
Windows Vista sucessor may be scheduled for H2 2009 release, according to TG daily

I was going to title this thread "Vista looks more like Win ME mk II than ever", but I figured people should actually read the TGDaily bit. According to the article, it looks like 'Windows 7' will be coming sooner than expected. All things considered, including this rumoured forshortening of its lifespan, Vista really does look like ME mk II.

Windows 7 Just a Pit Stop to Windows 8?

Sinofsky, the former head of the Office project, is implementing the same development strategy with Windows as with the Office System. Smaller incremental releases separate by smaller periods of time (just two years for Office). In this context, Windows 7 could very well be nothing more than a pit stop to Windows 8. Delivered just three years after Vista, Windows 7 will only serve to prepare the fertile soil for Windows 8. And in this regard, Windows 8 will bring on the true Windows evolution, with Windows 7 being somewhat of a more modest release. Still, at this point, it is all nothing more than speculation, especially with the Redmond company completely mute on the subject.

Nothing new here. After the Windows XP rollout, they expected that Longhorn server would allow them to quickly roll out what would be Vista just 3 years later. However, Longhorn had technical and legal issues that forced them to rethink release dates for both desktop and server OS platforms. After the Vista release, MS believes they will be able to release a new OS every three years for both desktop and server. Expect the release dates to be more flexible than that, though, because adopting new technologies means hardware and software man. have to follow. With Vista, the following was so late in coming that it took nearly half a year for the majority of hardware man. to have drivers updated. In other words, don't hold your breath for the next release even though everyone has future planning in place for it.

In my opinion Windows ME was the bigger disappointment out of the two, but Vista is not far behind. I do hope Microsoft will restore my faith in Windows with the next release.

Vista is much more stable than XP. How can people even compare it to ME. Most of the people that are complaining are trying to put it on old machines, or machines with minimum hardware. Vista will be around for a long time. Just wait and see. A bunch of these articles are written by people who are apple advocates too.

I'd like to know how Vista is more stable than XP? XP has been rock solid for me. Vista is slow even in the most simple of tasks and no I'm not running Vista on some ancient computer. If I had installed Vista on an early P4 machine with 512MB then I'd agree, I would have no right to complain. As it happens my laptop is equipped with a C2D and 2GB of Ram.

XP is better by miles

Apparently you did not have xp when it first came out without a service pack. Vista is leaps and bounds ahead of where xp was. Go back in time and remember all the people saying they were not going to switch to xp because it was so slow. Vista has that same problem for some I understand that. 2gb of ram is not what is going to speed up your system. What processor do you have? Other items in your computer also make a difference. Don't blame the os, blame the computer manufacturer for making it with crappy parts. I built a machine and it runs much faster in vista than I could even imagine compared to the old os xp. XP sucks compared to vista.

I have been using XP from the start and I did encounter a share of problems, but it was a godsend to my previous Windows ME setup which was just plain awful. However going from XP to Vista does little for me exception of some nice desktop effects.
I have had vista on two machines, but my AMD 4400X2 is back to XP and my Core2Duo laptop still has Vista. Both are decent spec machines and if I need a High end Quad system to make Vista speedy, that would indicate just how much of an inefficient bloat OS Vista really is.
Yeah XP sucks compared Vista :sarcastic: XP is faster in most benchmarks I have seen exception of some gaming tests where Vista is catching up. XP has the better compatibility too and the fact many businesses wont touch Vista with a barge pole says it all really.

I just hope Microsoft can restore my confidence in Windows with the next release

When they do the benchmarks they use the same equipment. That is like taking 2000 and comparing it to xp and using the same equipment.
Keep xp, thats fine. Buy some decent stuff and you will have a much better machine with vista.

Who's to say that "Windows 7" isn't going to be "ME version 3". Just because it's something new does not mean it's going to be any better. Anyways I've been using Vista now for 3 months and have no problem with it compared to XP. Also, don't forget the amount of duct tape wrapped around XP compared to Vista. Vista at the most right now has a few scotch tape wraps but SP1 will be the first real patch job. Not only that XP will be going on it's THIRD SP. I remember when people were not so welcoming to XP including myself. Not only that I was able to pick up Vista home basic for $73. So if it completely bombs and becomes a dead end with Windows 7 smashing it....it was only $73..and I believe I have already gotten my moneys worth in the 3 months I've used it. Afterall it lets me use the computer.

That's kinda funny since the loudest screams are coming from gamers. Gamers aren't known for using low end equipment.

What are you saying? My Vista e-machine runs games totally sweet. I play tons of games...like Tetris...Sudoku Extreme...Ultimate Pac-Man....works great!

Just because they are gamers does not make them totally intelligent computer users either. I use vista and it totally blows xp away. For the people that are having problems, they are not doing something right is all or they just need to fix something.

All my high end games work great on Vista. Performance is about the same with XP, give or take a few frames, here is proof: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardwar [...] page9.asp.

The situation at the outset was bleak but new drivers and MS fixes have saved the day for Vista gaming. Just don't read the OLD benchmarks and decide they are set in stone, like some Vista haters have.

Lots of current gamers here very happy with Vista.

Loudest screams against Vista are from :

1. Corporate/business world - some real compatibility issues there.

2. Weak/old machines, particularly with less than 2 gig RAM. Some of them seem sluggish on Vista.

3. People who have philosophical problems with DRM and the 'locked down' Vista security.

4. People who have no idea what they are talking about

If you are getting a brand new powerful machine you will like Vista - just make sure any older apps or hardware you plan to use are supported. Vista has some b
