I've just read a local report that Cooler Master's iGreen 600W PSU (RS-600-ASAA) failed during test to provide 100% loading.

Since I was considering the iGreen 500W PSU for my new rig, I was wondering if anybody else has read other reports about this problem with Cooler Master's PSU whether iGreen, Real or Extreme series.

Probably because running 100% load on any PSU is bad. Personally I usually shoot for 80% max or lower for safety reservations. Not to mention the +5v/+3.3v rails and the +12v rails combined have a fixed max wattage, so pushing all of them to max simultaneously will result in a overload situation. Would you have a source link?

The igreen 500w is rated for +12v@33A max so your +12v calcs should be +12v@~26A or lower if you want it to last any amount of time.

Cooler Master's repuation was marred slightly with the eXtreme Power 600W (jonnyguru review link) since it is a decent 500w unit with a 600w rating of +/- 10% of the ATX spec :x . Really every model is different since they use a variety of OEMs, for example the eXtreme Power 430W (another JG review link) is an excellent 400w unit that uses hipro as the OEM (not seventeam as they are the 500w model OEM).

A lot of people don't like to research OEM lineage so for them it is just easier to say "cooler master sucks" - that's just lazy IMO

I understand that but this certain Taiwan made PSU performed to 80 Plus standards at 110% load.

How stable it was at 110% load, the review did not say but for what it's worth I'll give you a link to it.

The PSU in question is the Delta Server Power 550W GPS-550ABA but the review is in Chinese. You can get a Google translation but it turns out to be gobble-dee-goop!

On the contrary, the Delta PSU is cheaper than it's Cooler Master equivalent.

The only down side of the Delta unit is it's packaging - the Cooler Master comes in a shiney stainless steel case whereas the Delta looks like a real cheapo unit with it's bland case.

Dissapointed - not in cooler master, the review.

No o-scope traces, no "in-between" load test info so you can't see where the CM failed to provide the juice. Was was the max per rail the unit did provide just prior to shutdown? Did it actually shut down w/ a breaker trip or blown fuse? Did they replace the unit and it happened a second time? No clue, all I saw was this

In a way, I am shocked and intrigued... I still have no idea if any of those units can provide a clean signal at min, max or inbetween

Oh well, read through the jonnyguru links in my previous post he provides a very detailed review and not just the results. SPCR also gives detailed load test data so you can chart the efficency / power factor nicely.

As far as Delta goes, I have seen quite a few pass through our datacenter as the OEM for server equipment, but not in the consumer space. A quick froogle search... hmm only one DPS-500HB A:

That's a tough fit... but typical of the Delta Server grade power supplies I have seen.

Any retailers on this side of the pond that you know of? If not I really will be shocked and intrigued...

I'm just surprised that the Cooler Master did not do as well as I had expected.

I am curious to see how the 500w and the 600w units measure up, it could be they pulled another "extreme power" job and just labeled the 500w with a 600w sticker :?
