I have setup active sync and my firewall to allow me to run active sync over
the Internet back to my desktop however this only works when I connect my
PPC to the Internet thru a non-natted type of connection such as dial up. If
I use a public WiFi or even corp Wifi where the IP given to my PPC is a
private internal lan IP active sync fails or rather just hangs after
connecting. The only difference I can see between the two types of
connections is when I wifi I am being natted thus you have natting on both
ends of the connection vs. when you dialup your getting a fully routable IP
address with no natting on the PPC end.

Ideas? Solutions other than VPN?

You must have open ports in both ends for it to work.

ya think?

As stated via dialup on the PPC which would not be a natted connection
things work fine. Using a wifi be it public, private, etc I get connected
but then it hangs and the big difference would be your natted on both ends.
I've tested with wifi access points that I know do not filter any
connections with the same result.

As long as you have all four ports open and redirected to the PPC's
IP# on one end and to the PC running AS on the other it works also if
your NAT'ed.

I use to sync this way with my X30 while being at my brothers house
and it's the only way I had success (if not putting the PPC outside
of the FW) else I got connection but the icon just spinned but no
sync.
