I'm using WM2003 to read my IMAP account. I have to enter a prefix for the  
path to my mailbox directory, but can't find any option (when every other  
email program I use has it). Any suggestions? maybe there is an option in  
the registry?

Assuming it's an imap server, you should be able to simply enter the ip  
address of the host computer.

It is an imap server, and entering the IP does give me a connection. But my  
mailbox directory is "Mail" - which I can enter, for example, in  
OutlookExpress as my "root folder directory". In PocketPC IMAP there seems  
to be no option for this.
 
The current symptom is that upon connection, PocketPC inevitably tries to  
update the list of mail folders from the default location, which gives the  
complete giant list of files in my UNIX main directory and leaves messaging  
in an unusable state.
 
Any suggestions? I feel quite lost here, maybe there's an alternative to the  
built-in messaging that supports IMAP (and secure IMAP) better?

That doesn't sound like "server access" rather like file access... can  
you clarify?  You may be talking about "sync" rather than "server"
 
If it is indeed an "IMAP Mail Server"
 
a connection description, lan internal?, trying to get to the box from  
the internet??
 
What security is in place on the box and the lan (firewall's etc)
 
Can you ping the box from the ppc? (see http://BevHoward.com/NetWk.htm  
for tips, tools)
 
what port(s) does the imap server use?
 
what's the format of the ip addressing you are using in setup?

Beverly: An IMAP server serves you the default "INBOX" folder where yor
incoming mail is put. The name of the folder is IIRC always INBOX. But
that's not what Frank is taking about.
 
You can also use remote folders through IMAP protocol, meaning that you
can view the same folders on all your IMAP clients. That's the reason that
I installed and am using exlusively IMAP on our server - I see exactly the
same folder structure and content (and even addressbook) from whichever
client I choose on a PC and from wherever (work, home,...) I connect to
the server.
 
However, different implementations of IMAP name the root of these
directories differently and you have to be able to set the root on your
mail client. For example, for a uw-imap server at our site I have to use
"~/mail/", whilst for a Cyrus server the name "mail/" is specified in the
global configuration and I only need to use "INBOX.".
 
Frank: I have also been looking at this problem. Unfortunately, I haven't
been able to find this setting the default application. WebIS Mail does
have an advanced option for setting the folder root, but, unfortunately,
it's not free.

Well - if it solves my problem, I'd definitely be ready to pay for it.  
Although I find that the omission of being able to specify the default mail  
directory is definitely a bug in the client. That option is already  
mentioned in the IMAP protocol, I believe.

Indeed. I'm still waiting for a port of Pine to Pocket PC

I've been trying it out, but so far it has proven to be a bit unstable,
especially when deleting or moving a larger number of messages. But we'll
see.
