I want to buy a pda for general use and also use with TomTom 5.  Should I
buy an HP Ipaq 4700 or a Dell X50V?  Or what?

Hi Jim,
 
I would suggest the HP Hx4700 if you want to use GPS mapping programs. A  
4" daylight readable VGA display makes a real difference. Other features  
that are important are both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, CF and SD slots, at  
least 64MB RAM, manufacturer commitment to an upgrade of the OS to  
Windows Mobile 2005, and a high capacity, removable battery. Check with  
the TomTom site to be certain that their software is compatible with the  
PDA that you chose. Many PDAs are listed as incompatible with TomTom.

I use this PocketPC with a Socket wireless bluetooth GPS Nav kit. With  
regards to the HX4700, the only feature of it that I am not sure about is  
its inclusion of a Laptop like Touchpad as opposed to the standard  
navigation buttons you find on PocetPC's.

I have owned several iPAQs over the years.  Several months ago, I purchased  
an x50v.
The x50v is much better than anything the iPAQ lineup offers.  Bluetooth,  
Wi-Fi, SDIO and CF Slots, a 16mb graphics accelerator, VGA Screen, 624MHz  
processor, all for less than the equivalent iPAQ.  Plus, the x50v has  
interchangeable batteries.  This is really  a 'no-brainer".   Add to that  
that Dell has announced an upgrade to Windows Mobile 2005 for the x50v,  
while HP has not announce which models, if any, will be upgradeable.
