Hi, i'm currently facing problem while trying to delete a
folder in Win2000. I've logged on to the PC using
Administrator a/c but still unable to delete that
particular folder.

The following are the error messages appeared:
- Error deleting file or folder
- Cannot delete file and folder, the directory is not
empty.
- Cannot delete ntuser.pol:Access is denied. The source
file may be in use.
- Error performing inpage operation.

Hi,

Whose profile does ntuser.pol belong to? If you are e.g. trying to delete
profile name "Mike" you can't be loged on as Mike at the same time. You must
use some other account that is administrator on the system.

Try also to first reboot the computer and then delete the file.

Miha's correct, try rebooting then attempt to delete the file. Sometimes an
open handle can survive the reboot though.

Ultimately, you may consider using HANDLE.EXE (from
http://www.sysinternals.com) to identify the pricess ID (PID) which has the
file open, then use KILL.EXE to stop that PID.

C:\Tools>handle /?

usage: handle [-a] [-p <processname>] [name]
-a Dump all handle information
-p Dump handles belonging to process (partial name accepted)

I had a problem like that. This worked for me!

It works for all of these errors:

Path too long.


Error cannot delete file: cannot read from source file or disk


Cannot delete file: Access is denied


There has been a sharing violation.


Cannot delete file or folder The file name you specified

is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name.


The source or destination file may be in use.

If you have problems like "Error Deleting File or Folder" , one of the best tools for solving this would be Long Path Tool found at http://****.

Long Path Tool can simplify and probably end your problems in unlocking, managing and renaming files that appear to have a long filename.



If you encounter errors as :


• Path too long

• Error cannot delete file: cannot read from source file or disk

• Cannot delete file: Access is denied

• There has been a sharing violation.

• Cannot delete file or folder The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name.

• The source or destination file may be in use.

• The file is in use by another program or user.

• Error Deleting File or Folder

• Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

• Error Copying File or Folder.

• Cannot remove folder.

• The filename or extension is too long.

• Path too deep.

• Destination Path Too Long.

• Could not find this item.

• Filename is not valid.

• The file could not be accessed.
