I am a new Ipaq 1710 user and would like to store some photographs on
it, preferably for viewing as a slideshow. Could I have the benefit of
someones experience in this field to establish the best way to do this ?
I have a 1G SD card for storage.

Is there not software with your machine? If not there's a few like IA
Album worth investigating- a free version came with my (non-ipaq) ppc
that allows slideshows.

Show > Set Up Show

I thought that the HP Image Zone needed the photographs to be reduced
in size to suit the Ipaq, perhaps I am wrong but I want to view the
photographs full size on the screen. As I said I am new to this so I
guess I should try a nd see what I get!

Not that I know of. You can keep the original size. If it's the same
as in iPAQ Image Viewer you can zoom in or out (200%, 100%, 50%, zoom
to fit width/window, ...) and you can also rotate.

'Full size' like in '100%' or full size 'fit to window' ? Both should
be possible.

Fit to window, I don't want the zoom feature at all, but does this
means storing a bigger file than I really need to display the image? I
need to conserve storage memory.

I guess so, but if you've got 1 GiB... I got 2 (full) movies, several
short movies, about 30 MiB of pictures, a couple games and several
documents (as well as backups) stored on my CF card and I still got
about 225 MiB of free memory left.

If that is the case, then you might give Irfanview a try. You can use
this freeware program (on your PC) to convert a batch of images to a
particular size (width/height). I think your resolution is 240 (W) x
320 (H) pixels.

Also there is a xp powertoy that resizes images down to a preset ppc size (
and others), directly from a highlight and right click in explorer. Simple
to use, and you can pull the resized pics wirelessly or through AS.
