I suppose with a little more RAM, a happenin' video card, and a L3 cache boost my 1998 DEC Alpha workstation is still not going to outpace my current 1GHz Pentium III laptop, but I'll be damned if the thing still doesn't run fast as lightning. Here's where the problem lies. Computers that run REALLY fast don't exist in the consumer PC market, and they never will. Some well respected hardware reviewers still call the Pentium 4, "Intel's Flagship", while forgetting that the Itanium even exists. While they believe the real performance race is between an Athlon and a Pentium 4, they forget about the Power3, PA-RISC, and Alpha performance battle that really exists. That isn't even the battle, look at telecom. I hear tell from work at a large communications company that someone in a lab in Toronto created an optical switch that can switch the entire world's communications on one chip!!! That was 4 years ago fellows. If we could only get these hardware guys to integrate a little more smoothly with our software developers we would have blazingly fast computers churning out data from H-E-double hockey sticks. I have yet another question, why are computers still so large. It seems to me that CardBus technology rocks, quick, someone make it 64 bit and run the suckers at 1GHz. Okay, so it might get a little hot, but F-it, that could rock the world.yes, I want a computer that has a processor box that can be upgraded and or multiplied as many times as I so chose, a video box that can be upgraded and multiplied as many times as I so chose, and memory, storage, I/O, multimedia components that fit the bill. How tough is it? I don't know, I'm not a hardware engineer. And darn it, I want to be able to network these suckers seamlessly. I mean when I plug in to the network, I don't know there's a network, I just have availability of applications and data that I couldn't get to before, and none of this text mode s**t. I should be able to have a one on one video teleconference with any user on the network (and the internet). Think of the competition available here. AMD comes out with new 5GHz processor, just buy our $300 box instead of buying a whole computer. New HyperGigaRAM from Samsung, just plug in our new box. What? You want your video accelerator to access system RAM, don't think about it, just plug that little f**ker in. Hell keep your old RAM and processor boxes too, we'll just triple your performance. Hey, I know, you want to use your laptop as your main interface, no problem just plug that sucker into the network. You say you want to press 1000 CD's and send them off to the record company, the address list is somewhere on the network do a quick Google search for the database file the link off to the pressing company along with a link to the beautifully performed techno trance house gumbo mix you made at home on your hard drive. It'll go out the in about 2 hours, thank you for using your Smartcard Mr. Jones. This could be a fairly simple project if we get the right engineers. Neighborhood supercomputing at 4AM? : ) Anyone else interested?
