I recently made up a power cable from an old USB so-called phone
charger cable (never worked as such) and a power cable with suitable
plug for my Axim X50v. Unfortunately it doesn't work. The polarity is
OK.

For some reason my laptop only supplies 4.77 volts and won't even
light up the Axim charging light.

And when I plug it into a car 12 volt USB adapter, the light does come
on, but then proceeds to slowly DIScharge the unit even when it's
switched off!

Also when plugged in to the latter, I have to disconnect the power
supply before I can switch on the Axim. Weird.

I do believe that any USB charging cable will not charge the unit
unless it is off, as it effectively needs 5.4 volts, which cannot be
supplied by any USB port.

Which begs the question: how does one use an Axim for GPS navigation
when it has to be on for hours?

TIA.

Richard.

Well mine sits in a mount which is  powered. It also amplifies the sound,
and plays it through a speaker on the mount.

Do a search for Seidio G2500.

If you post the info about your cable on www.aximsite.com I'm sure you'll
get some help. There are a few guys on there who love to play around with
home made cables and break out boxes and stuff.

Regards

Martin

I use a car powered mount (Arkon) and a bluetooth mouse GPS receiver with my
x30i when on the road.  Works great and will run all day.

At home I can charge and use the x30i with a USB cable made for the x30i.
Perhaps your home made cable drops too much voltage.

I've done some further research and it would appear that there is a
specific problem with X50v as it needs 5.4 volts to charge when on.

There must be a suitable 5.4v charger somewhere out there.

Has anyone tried using one of those ordinary car voltage converters
that supply 6 volts amongst others? Would that work?

I'll keep looking.

Richard.
