Hello everybody.

I just did a fresh install of win2k pro with sp3
and wanted to install sp4 network install.

First the setup verifies the file with no failure
message, then it decompresses the files and here I
get the error message that the file is corrupted.

When I try to install directx 9.0c redistributable.
The files are decompressed with no error, but when
I run the setup, it says that a .cab file might be
corrupted.

In the last error message of one of the two setups
(sorry I don't know the exact one), it says that this
failure is maybe produced because of not enough memory
or disk space for virtual memory.
But it is fresh install and there is plenty of disk
space left.

I tried those two files on an other machine, and there
were no such errors.

I hope one of You know a solution to this problem.

Try again from a safe mode boot.

I have several copies of SP4 that I have downloaded from time to time. All and
every one of those give that message - yet the SP4 that was left on the computer
from the burn worked OK.

Next time I had trouble, I again re-installed and this time, as an experiment,
I copied the CD on a known location and ran it from that location on the hard
disk. It worked straight away.

Now, when in trouble, I no longer go the long way about it but have followed
Pegasus's advice about the use of Acronis for backups and restore - I can now
recover in less than 1/10 of the time.

I booted the computer in safe mode and tried to run sp4-setup,
but there was no difference.
The installation failed with the same error message.

Another idea?

Hello.

Yes, now I think there is something with the ram, too.
It's a new mainboard and maybe that doesn't like the
old RAM.

But in the meantime I managed to install the sp4 and the
directx by ignoring error messages and retrying:

I disabled serial ata in the bios, cause the device
manager showed that there must be a raid controller.
Actually this was the serial ata controller.
After booting win2k there were messages saying that
ide devices (dvd and hdd) are being installed.
Then I run the sp4-setup again from cd -> decompression
failed.
Then I copied the sp4-exe onto hdd and tried it again
-> decompression succeeded. But the installation failed
because the setup "couldn't copy file ntdskcc.dl_"

Ok, win2k reinstall.

Next try to install sp4 -> decompression succeeded ->
"couldn't copy file sqloledb.dl_"

Just another try: everything worked !!!

Installation of directx: no problems.

Installation of mainboard drivers: no problems.

Then I tried to install the graphics drivers from cd ->
"failure during extraction".
Copy the .exe to hdd -> installation worked fine.

So, but now I am not able to install the update for the
internet explorer. Several retries, but it doesn't function.

Next I will test the RAM with the linked memory diagnostic
tool.

Or does anybody know what the problem is?

Yes, the problem was the old RAM.
The old RAM failed on every memory test.

With the new RAM, everything works.

did you slipsteam sp4 into the 2k install. if not, do so.
