I have a 7800gs agp, 1gig of pc2700, a p4 2.4 ghz (no ht) with a 500w psu. I've read reviews of people who are able to play all there games on high with the natural res of 1280x1024. Thats my res and I can only play a game like BF2 on like 2 highs and the rest mediums comfortably. Whats limiting my system from performing its best with that card?

hey not that far off from me. you will find just like me that we should have gone with the Gainward Bliss GS+ 512mb card because if u want the best settings in most games at that res u will need the extra gfx ram. i game at 1280 x 1024 aswell and have just about every game on full except for oblivion which i just knock down a few draw distances but thats it.

i rekon your cpu would be a fair bit of a bottleneck for alot of games though, aswell with only 1gig of ram.

in bf2142 i have everything on highest with 2xAA and seem to not experience many problems.

1gig Geil DDR400 thats only running in single channel atm. cant be bothered to put sticks in the right spot yet.

i got a socket 478 board so what do you think i should do to upgrade? More ram? Better cpu? I don't want to upgrade everything to drastically because I want to build a dx10 pc before i go off to college next year.

2 gigs of ram for bf2 that is what people have said this will help game play, bf2 is a memory hog.

you could always get a nice new big fan for it. not really worth investing much money into your pc as next year isn't too far off now. as for the ram, go for it

I think i should just deal with the performance problems now. I have a huge copper heatsink and fan for the 2.4 anyways. I will be getting ddr2 memory later next year also so i don't think that would be worth having for just one year either. I don't know I don't know what i should get for christmas .

The point I'm trying to make to you is that these cards wont play modern games on high settings, you might be able to do it without anti aliasing or anisotropic filtering, but even then you'll need to set your drivers to high performance instead of quality :?

Maybe your friends play a lot of UT04 or games like that, I don't know, but even modern cheesy games like Need for Speed Carbon will bring the 7800GS to it's knees quickly.

do you think if i put another gig in my system then i would be able to play bf2 on all high? Or should i just have my parents buy me a 4000+, mobo, and x1950pro that should hold me off for a while..... what do you think?

It's the texture setting in BF2 that eats up ram, if you want that particular setting on high, you should buy more memory.

your cpu is the bottleneck. consider upgrading it. P4 2.4 is not a wise choice for gaming.
adding ram will also do some help, but not the more, the better. if you have 4 ram sticking in the board, the memory timing should be taken into consideration, too. make sure that your command rate is 1T. the timing will help more than mere capasity. you can check your memory timing with CPU-Z
