I used to take the CF cards from my camera and look at the pictures in my
PocketPC. Now, I'm getting a new PocketPC and it uses MMC/SD cards so my
camera's CF won't work. Are there any adapters out there that I can use?

Thanks,

Jeff

Chris, I know you can use an SD card in a CF slot with an adaptor, but AFAIK
there are no easily available options to access a CF card through a SD card
port. I checked the site you mention and still no mention - did I overlook
it?

This is one of those "may not be able to get there from here" situations.

The only option I know would be to use an SD card for the images using
an adapter in the camera itself such as the one at

http://www.buy.com/retail/Product_ [...] caid=17260

to store camera images directly to the sd card.

Depends on the camera, but some have internal memory so it might also be
possible to transfer images from a cf card to the camera memory, then
use the above adapter to receive the images from the camera memory.

You really should rethink your PPC purchase
if this capability is important to you.

There's no reasonable way to do it.

Buy something that has both types of slot.

I had just that need so went for a Fujitsu-Siemens Loox 720 which has both
CF and SD slots - and am very happy with it.

Bev's link is probably the best solution. That is one of only two CF to SD
adapters I know of that actually hold the SD card completely within the CF
form factor. I recall Panasonic makes one too and it is just as expensive.
There are lots of this sort of adapter that are under $20 but the SD card
sticks out and it wouldn't be usable in a CF camera where there is typically
a door that closes over the CF card. The good news is you only need one, and
that price is actually pretty good.

Because I want to be able to do it "in the field" and look at the pics on
the larger screen of the Axim X30. Is there a way to copy from CF to SD
while mobile?

Would help to know if you have already made the purchase and what the
make model is.

Since this is so important to you, it's hard to understand why you are
not getting a ppc with a CF slot.

>> can I transfer? <<

If the camera can't do it using the adapters previously posted and your
ppc only has an sd slot, don't know of any other option without adding
another piece of hardware... such as a laptop.

I bought a similar adaptor from pdaden in Hong Kong and tried to use it in
my PDA (F-S Loox 720) which has a CF-II slot. That was when I found a
problem! The card adaptor has a smooth edge at the top and no ridge to get
a grip of (or hook under) when removing it - I had to us pliers to get it
out!!

This was an issue on early microdrives as well

The general solution was to add a piece of strong fiber tape on one side
that extends out of the slot which will then allow you to extract the
card without needing pliers.

Of course! The obvious and simple solution is always the best!
Many thanks.

We did already purchase 2 of the Dell Axim X30s. At the pricepoint and the
processesor and WiFi/Bluetooth combination, it was a tough package to pass
on. My girlfriend's iPAQ screen blanked out and my battery on my Jornada
565 isn't what it used to be so we were in need of a quick fix and I ordered
the Axims.

We REALLY wanted a whole lot of features because we don't replace these
things very regularly. (Mindy's iPAQ was the old monochrome one)
Unfortunately...the CF card was the one feature that we lost in the
transaction. I assumed (I know, I know) that an adapter just HAD to exist
that would help me out.

In the short term, I will probably put the Jornada in my camera bag to use.
In looking for a better solution, I am wondering if there is a way to give
the PPC access to USB devices, then I could use my card reader. Is there a
cable that would go into the bottom of the Axim and then give it a USB
input?

Thanks,

Jeff
