Any recommendations on what is the "best" pocket PC currently on the market.
I've been looking at the Dell Axim X50v and the IPAQ hx4705 in particular,
but am not wedded to either. I want a fairly strong unit that can do GPS
navigation (with an add-on) and a lot of file storage.
Also, referrals to any web sites with comparisons of various pocket PCs also
appreciated.
Thanks

Interestingly enough, the 'BEST' Pocket PC is the SAME as the 'BEST'
restaurant - whatever BEST suits your needs/wants. (Stepping up on the
soapbox), you're already half way there in finding the 'BEST' Pocket PC
in that you know generally what you want. Now, think VERY carefully on
what you want the PPC to do and how you're going to use it. Do you just
need something for driving such as GPS? Do you want something to take
your Outlook folders (inbox, calendar, etc.) with you? Do you need/want
a built-in cellphone? Do you need/want wireless? Answer these questions,
grasshopper, and the path will be revealed.

I would have to say the Ipaq hx4700. After owning two PPCs, this is my
favorite for sure, with the VGA screen, 192MB RAM, SD and compact flash
slots, etc...

Rick,

"Best" is very hard to define. It really depends on your needs and purpose
for the device. I would suggest looking at the Pocket PC Magazine Buyers
Guide to get a good comparison chart of which device has what features and
which fit your needs. You can find it at
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/bg04/ppcs.asp. Once you find a device you are
interested, search the PPCMag forums and post back here to get owner
feedback on that device.

Regards,

Before you plunk down your hard earned on an X50v, try to get you hands on
one first. IMHO, VGA is soooooooo overrated as to be a gimmick on a
handheld. Of course, I don't watch movies or gaze at graphics on my X30, so
maybe I'm missing something I don't know I'm missing. Still, the X50v's that
I've played with leave me cold.

If you have any programs that require the use of the directional buttons on
a PPC then STAY AWAY FROM THE 4705. That touch pad is useless when it comes
to directional input.

As a marketing specialist, I have both (the respective manufacturers hope
that by giving me one of their units I will only recommend it to the
exclusion of the others). Based upon owning and using both models for
several weeks, by all means go with the Dell. ( I was dedicated to iPAQ
since my first one, a 3835). The Dell is $150 cheaper, and performs as well
as the 4705/4715. For apps that are VGA aware, the Dell's graphics
accelerator vastly outperforms the iPAQ. The *ONLY* advantage that I have
found in the 4715 is a little longer battery life (the 47xx has an 1800mah
battery, the Dell has an 1100mah). despite comments to the contrary, the
VGA is very worth it. It makes everything (QVGA, VGA, and True VGA) all
look significantly better.

In short, Dell has a winner in the x50v. This model alone has persuaded me
to leave the iPAQ camp. Perhaps had HP priced the 47xx more along the lines
of the x50v, I would have stayed, but at $150 less, it's a no brainer.

The best Pocket PC? The one that fits YOUR needs. Go down to
ComUSA/Circuit city/Best Buy/Staples and look at what is available.
Hold it, look at it, feel it, get an idea of how it feels in your
hand, how the screen looks, etc. That will give you an idea of
what is avaialbe. Unfortuneately you can't do that with the
Dell but you can with the Ipaq, and others.

For comparisons: subscribe to Pocket PC magazine, they have
a buyers guide that they publish annually. In the meantime try:

I would add though if you're looking for GPS/Cell phone it might be
better to look at something like On Star or something else built into
the car ESPECIALLY IF YOUR ARE IS IN A HIGH CRIME AREA (THE CITY).

After having lots of cars/radios/etc. stolen over the years
I realize that crime is a very real problem.

Not sure where you live but in Southern Cali Best Buy no longer carries
PPC's in their stores.

Circuit City, Staples, Office Depot, Office Max only carry the cheap bottom
of the line HP's.

CompUSA was the only place in my area to see a full line of PPC, except for
the Dell.

If anything VGA is underrated. The difference if you read etexts
to any degree at all is nothing short of astonding. It's like reading
a printed page. The 4" screen of the 4700 gives you 200dpi
resolution.

Well, I bought the rz1710, which I'm sure as you all know, is the bottom of
everyone's list.

I bought the Fortuna U2 GPS and TinyStocks Navio software and it works
wonderfully well. You don't need all that memory and functionality.

I even bought a small 12 volt lead-acid battery and take the combination on
my hikes. Works every tme

You'll want to buy & install BREAKBREAKER from www.pocketgear.com. Think
Tetris.
