Thread : Basic GPS software for PPC?

Hi,

I'm after a basic program that will read data from my PPC's built in GPS and
decode it into UK OS grid, Altitude & Maidenhead locator data.

Having done a search on the net I only see expensive map programs that take
up valuable space on the ppc but don't provide the data I require.

I'm beginning to regret selling my Garmin GPS3.

Any help appreciated.

TTFN.

Which PPC (that has built in GPS?)

the ppc-phone editions "gps" abilities are not standard GPS...
otherwise, I am not aware of any other devices except the ppc's that are
specifically built as gps devices... and they should have built in gps apps.

I think what Bev was trying to convey was that the PPCs he knew of that had
built in GPSs also had built in mapping capability, and he wasn't aware of
any PPCs with built in GPS that didn't.

Looks like the OP has that covered, but is wanting data output in that weird
UK format, rather than the typical Lat, Long, Elevation readout that you can
get several programs to do. I haven't seen anything like that but I wouldn't
be looking for it. You might try posting in the forums at
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/index.php. I believe they are out of the UK,
and the likelihood some of their subscribers having looked for and found
something would be higher than here I would imagine.

The PPC device (one of many with GPS built in) is a MyGuide Navigator
6500XL, runs on Windows Mobile 2003 and comes with a built in GPS receiver.
Software included Falk Navigator, although I run TomTom because I find
inputting easier.

Still as good as Falk & TomTom are they DO NOT show UK OS GRID, altitude or
Maidenhead locator data. The output from the GPS is standard NMEA data.

Surly the must be some simple software that will display the above mentioned
data on the screen similar to a Garmin handheld GPS? I'm not looking for map
display just basic information as mentioned above.

Looks like I'll be buying another Garmin GPS. :-(

There is nothing weird about UK Ordnance Survey Grid data, it is the best
I've seen anywhere in the world for plotting locations.

Also Maidenhead locator information is used world wide, so I don't
understand why you haven't heard of it when Garmin include it and many more
international datum's in their handheld GPS devices.

If you do not know of any software that will provide the information I'm
looking for then please do not post stupid replies.

A maidenhead locator would be damn useful indeed. I want one.

At this point the only option I could suggest (and I assume you already
have) is to run google searches on the goal you need.

There has been discussion here previously on the UK grids, but remember
little about it.

Tip... use the keyword POCKETPC, then, after you review the results,
click on "did you mean..."

Also, do specific searches using google groups.

Geez, lighten up guy. My world deals in Lat, long and elevation, which
incidentally is what the GPS satellites receivers supply, regardless of what
subsequent translation is applied. I guess my link to a UK based GPS forum
had little value for someone looking for UK Ordnance map support.

None of the units listed are PPC based. Some are Win-CE based and some
are linux based. Some don't even have an operating system that is
separate from the GPS itself.
