I have been noticing ram prices going up and I just read that was expected. Well why? whose chip factory burned down this time?

Ya i have noticed this.  Been trying to find 2 X 1GB of DDR400 (3200).  But prices average $200? OMG.  Prices of everything else goes down, CPU, MB's, even graphics cards.  DDR2 240 pin even cost less.  But if you looking for 184-pin DDR 400 then prepare to sell your sister.

184-pin DDR DIMMs are obsolescent - current MBs & systems are using DDR2.  No surprise that old stuff gets more expensive.

Calling DDR obselete is a bit premature. Its only the new systems in the last year that have changed to it. Majority of people still have computers with DDR as it does the job nicely myself included.

 
If you compare the prices today with the prices in the end of July, you'll notice that prices for DDR2 667mhz have gone up as well.

Just to clarify, you'll note I called DDR "obsolescent" (i.e. nearing being obsolete), not "obsolete".  I agree with you overall; the point is that folks thinking about buying more DDR rather than upgrading to DDR2 need to realize that their next MB will likely take only DDR2, not DDR.

DDR1 prices are going up because DDR2 is now in higher demand.

That And The Fact That DDR600 Would Have Lower Latencys And Have Nearly The Same Bandwidth As  DDR2 667, And Most Athlon 64 Systems Have Little Trouble Running Even DDR600 Speeds And Remain Perfecty Stable Even At 1:1 Ratio, Even My Cheap (But Quite Feature Ritch) Caintech Zenith VE Socket 939 Board Can Accomplish With A Little "Tweaking".

The thing is that because the top memory manufacturers (Micron, Samsung, Hynix) are more devoted to Nand Flash and specialty Drams (for servers) and there is now more demand for DDR2 (thanks to AM2 and C2D) than they expected there is a little shortage of DDR and DDR2 chips. That is WHY the Prices are going up.

Yes but most manufacturers ave shifted to DDR2 as there is a bigger market in new PC's than upgrades.  Additionally as Mig1619 there has been a shift to other types of memory being produced, in Samsung's case NAND for iPods.
 
Throw in the fact that people are generally building systems with more memory, and Vista will demand even more and prices should continue to increase until more capacity comes online. Its pretty much the cycle of things for memory, prices increase, people build new plants, prices plunge from over capacity, demand increase due to low prices, repeat.

I agree with the cycle.
And memory prices are going up on RAGE. Rebates are dissapearing and Corsair rises by the day!
 
My recommedation: get Gskill for AMD and OCZ for intel  

I pulled the trigger and bought 2set of corsair 2gb ddr2 kits. Had to pay the premium.  

9/3/2006 - Fry's selling 2 X 1GB DDR2 PC6400 for $150 after rebate.  Now if i could only find DDR 3200 for that price . . . . . . .
