Just wondering if there are any options out there for running dual core dual processors out there. Either Intel or AMD.

Will a dual opteron board run two athlon x2's?

A dual socket S940 board will only run Opteron 2xx (either dual/single core). Same clock speed of running two.

There are no dual socket S939 boards because it's not technically possible.

Well on Intel's side there's the Xeon 5000/5100 serires that are dual-dual-core but only the 5100 series is worth the money. There's also the Itanium 2 platform but that's for like mainframes and stuff.

AMD still has the dual-dual-core Opertrons but that's only the 200 series.

Thank you for your reply... Excuse my ignorance on the subject but, I thought that 939 pin processors worked in 940 pin boards it just "wasn't recommended" by AMD.

Is what you say true of *all* 939 processors? Or just the dual core 939s?

No sir, I woulnd't try it if it were my CPU and mobo, I'll tell you that! AM2 is a 940-pin socket, and not even that one is compatible with the original socket 940. Careful!
