Hello.

My father had a stoke a few years ago and his reading isn't all that good
anymore. However, he still would like to know what is going on - just so he
can get angry at The Daily Mail I think - and how stupid their reporters
are.

Anyways. He is not technical at all. However I would like to get him
something that could read out the days news (doesn't have to be the Daily
Mail) that would be simple for him to use.

Money is no object really. It would have to be something very simple to
use.

Ideally something with a WiFi connection that could connect to the computer
upstairs or the inetrent directly (I could get them a WiFi hub and a route
no problem). But is there a program that could send this electronic paper
to his PDA so he can sit and listen to it...and have it send it there
automatically everyday at say 9:00 am.

Hopefully it would just read out the categories first - like headlines,
sport, finanace.

When he chooses one of these categories then it could read out the headlines
and have 5 big nembers appear down the screen then its says

press 1 for man rescues kitten from tree.

press 2 for tony blair treips up slightly.

press 3 for more Princess Diana stuff.

press 4 for more middles east blat.

press 5 for more headlines.

So he just presses the number and then has a rewind, fast forward, back to
previous menu, pause button on the screen.

Am I just dreaming or is there a combination of stuff out there that could
do this?

I would have to set everything up so he doesn't have to even think about
things and just has big buttons on the screen maybe with the atricle so he
can watch it read to him and see the pictures.

Like 5 see through buttons down the side so you can still see the words and
pictures in the background.

Thanks.

As far as i see it you got two routes.
PDA and Tablet PC

PDA: get something like a T3 or T5 that rotates to landscape. I would say
get a palm os device as they crash less.
Get a free account from avantgo, and select the channels he wants(You can
get the times, and the guardian for free!).
Buy a sandisk wifi card and get the router etc. to set up the network.

In all should cost you about £300 pounds if you go a T3

Tablet pc

Buy a tablet pc, cheapest will cost you about 800 quid. Once again set up a
wifi network, and then make a list of favourites. Put them all on the
desktop and make the icons big.
This will set u back a grand

Pros and Cons
The PDA method will leave you with some spare change, but the resolution on
the pda's can't touch that of a full size pc.(320 x 480 vs 1024 v 800, u
decide!). The PDA solution might need a pc to work. If you get the pc u
could get the text "massive and could do stuff like email, and become a real
net surfer, lol.

hope that was useful.

Frankly, I'd go with a computer.

you might want to look into :
Windows XP Plus! Digital Media Edition: Sync & Go for Pocket PC
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp [...] rch18.mspx
it works similar to avantgo, but it syncs audio and video, rather than just
text, you just select which news/info source you want to get info from and
it will load video and audio of news stories from various sources to your
device when you sync, I believe it evens gives you the option to play one
after the other in order, or you can jump around manually. you are limited
to the info sources they provide, but it might be enough to keep dad in the
"know"

good luck

Yeah thats great. Thanks dude.

Think the PDA sounds more attractive then it can be his phone too and he
will be more familiar with that.

Well, its getting him to sit down in front of the thing. He is quite stuck
in his ways. Gets up, goes downstairs sits in the front room or if its
sunny sits in the conservatory while my mother brings him in his breakfast,
tea and the paper.

I can't see them wanting a comuter in the conservatory or lounge really.
Plus even if I did show him where to click on he wouldn't use it.

If the device is also his phone he will have some sense of 'his-ness' about
it and will become familiar with it. He can even send a text message now!
I never thought he would be able to but he did.

Cheers anyways.

Think about it. You're saying his reading isn't all that good anymore,
and then asking him to do his news browsing on a tiny screen. PDA should
be ruled out, phone should certainly be ruled out. That leaves you with
a tablet PC, which was an excellent suggestion from another poster. The
problem I see would concern the use of his hands following stroke-- is
his writing recognizable enough or his hand/eye coordination good enough
for touchscreen input modalities? If not, a plain old laptop is your
best bet.

I may be out of line in saying this, but have you considered going there and
reading to your father yourself? My father passed away a few years back,
and I would today trade my iPaq, my PC, my wifi router and cable internet
for a year for 30mins with him now. Its not always convenient, the valuable
things in life rarely are. Technology has its place...my father was 24hrs
from death and I sat with him, his mind fuzzy and eyes dim and unable to
read. I pulled out my iPaq, turned the screen up bright and showed him
pictures of my mother/his wife, the kids etc. He couldnt comprehend the
device he was holding, but he could see the pictures clearly, and was amazed
& touched....being there tho was a memory I wouldnt trade for anything.

If you are close to someone with a walkman turned up real loud it is
annoying. Very annoying. It is far from bothering anyone else. Try public
transport and there's often people doing what you are advocating-
anti-social behaviour.

His eye site is fine! His reading though is becoming more and more of an
effort for him though which is why I want to do this.

Its easy enough for him to press 1- 5 on a pda screen and also its very
portable - which a laptop isn't. I mean laptops are portable - but would
you want to carry one around the house whilst changing a light bulb or
whatever else! Even a tablet pc wouldn't fit in his pocket.

I don't really want him to do his news browsing on a tiny screen. I want it
to read him the headlines and tell him what number to press for each
headline. Thats hardly doing your news browsing on a PDA! He wouldn't even
need to look at the screen except to press the correct, large button.

And when he knew where the buttons were he wouldn't even need to look at the
screen at all.

He won't be doing any writing on it but he can press buttons. He can text
ok enough.

I'll give you his address and you can pop around then.... ;)

I do take your point though but he's my dad. And like many dads he is hard
to talk to or with. He is good at talking at people though and this just
annoys me to be honest.
