A few years ago, I bought an HP Jornada and fell in love, when it broke
I bought another and another. Now tho, in late 2004, more than 3 years
since I bought my first Jornada I have purchased a Dell Axim x30. It's a
nice improvement, but there are somethings about it I hate. Namely the
image viewer, and the task switcher. I thought, well why not just copy
the old utilities over to the axim. Well I tried, and I get an error
that ROM Applications cannot be copied, and Rescoe just says cannot find
file. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can extract the task switcher
and imgviewer from the ROM?

Woh ROM is an acronym which stands for Read Only Memory....so I
don't think so. Boy this takes me way back to my computer school days I
hope I got that exactly right If i'm wrong, someone please correct me.

Okay, well please correct me
but CD-ROM stands has Read Only Memory
Yet I can copy files from a CD Drive
So why can't I copy files FROM not TO my ROM on my Jornada for my Dell.

The files that you are able to copy/manipulate....etc...etc...came from off
the Compact Disc, or CD which would be inside the CD-ROM drive. Believe me,
the files are not a part of any ROM.

I'm not sure how you tried to do the copy, but I can drag ROM resident fills
out of my PPC onto my desktop using AS Explore, and presumably then drag
them into another PPC. Your issue though is more complex. The applications
are more than just the single executable in most cases. There are dlls, and
registry entries involved as well. That is why most PPC programs arrive with
an install routine, to get everything into the right place.

The picture viewer app on the Jornada would most likely not work on any
other platform anyway. It was primarily designed as an adjunct to the camera
app for HPs CF camera, and likely expects to be on a Jornada. That was one
you were able to get updates from on the HP web site and folks tried to
install it on other devices to be able to use the camera as it was the best
available. No luck reported. I honestly don't recall a Jornada specific
task switcher. It's been a while, but I expect you'd have similar problems.

Might I suggest Resco's picture viewer. It is quite good. Or the one from
SPB Software House. For a task switcher there are dozens, and I'm sure you
can find one that suites you. I favor SPB Pocket Plus myself, as it also
adds a number of other useful enhancements.

I stand corrected. Thanks Sven for clearing that up for me. Why the heck
do they call it ROM then? Sheesh Isn't it even flashable (at least
some ROM's anyway)?

You were correct at first, but confused. ROM certainly is read only, but
the question is about reading, not writing. Yes some ROMs are writable,
like FLASH, but it takes special software to do so, which is not included in
all PPCs. Also, CD-ROMs are in fact a form of ROM, hence the name, but not
all CDs are CD-ROMs of course.

BUT, on a PPC, not all files in ROM can be copied out of the ROM. This
really doesn't have anything to do with the hardware, but instead has to do
with the software which controls the hardware. So while Sven has copied
some files out of ROM, it is not possible to do so with *all* files.

Won;t work because the Jornada is SH3 and the Axim is ARM processors.
That would be like trying to run a DOS app on a Mac.

You might want to try some of the 3rd party image views. I had a
Jornaada & went Dell as well. I currently use ACDSee Mobile and Wisbar
(For task switching... it's pretty darn good). I'm on an X30h as well
and both apps seem to work tolerably well.
