On two pc's running 98se one recognises the a USB pendrive ok. Inserting in
USB port loads and shows up under My Computer.

On the other pc inserting in the USB port loads (shows in device manager)
but does not show under My Computer until rebooted.
It now continues to work ok providing it's fitted when stating the computer.

Two different pen drives with the software for each installed.

The pc that works ok has a usb pci card fitted. The other is using the
inbuilt USB port.

Can anyone help with this ?

Does the inbuilt USB port work okay with any other USB devices?

A lot of Windows 98 systems were shipped with USB ports built-in but
with the ports themselves disabled in the computer's BIOS.

Check in Control Panel - System - Device Manager to make sure that the
USB ports are active and are being detected by Windows. If they are
not listed then you need to check the BIOS setup and make sure they
are not disabled there. And you may also want to go to the
motherboard manufacturer's web site and download any Windows 98
drivers for your motherboard model.

Good luck
