Hi all,

I presently subscribe to an online service called uptodate.com

They have sent me 2 CD's which are for a handheld (PC only,) PDA. I own
a Zire 72, and they don't have plans for producing software for that OS.
I've been looking at the various HP iPAQ and Dells, and am a bit
perplexed with all the new stuff.

I see that they have WiFi and Bluetooth. The PDA will be used for
running a program that requires 1GB, so most of the memory will be used
for data that takes up that much. I don't care for camera, but would
like MP3. I see the iPAQ offer that, but I don't see them on the Dells.

Any suggestions before I dish out 1/2 a grand + the memory? My business
has taken a toll on me (negative cash flow because of initial overhead
expenses,) and I don't want to make a mistake--something I usually make
for not seeking advice.

TIA,

Rich

check- a handheld is not a pc. Sometimes called a ppc but be sure of what
you need.

That's not relevant from what you have said so is an unjustified additional
cost. Unless you have a need?

most ppc's have 64Mb of internal memory so for 1 Gb you will need a storage
card- Compact Flash may be the lowest cost, and this size may not be
available for some other memory types/ CFII cards are available to over 2GB
that are small hard drives and better value than solid state memory- worth
considering. Look at the type of memory your choices of ppc's use, look at
memory costs and sizes that are available.

All ppc's will have a media player and winampaq is free, as are some others.
Download and Install if you don't like the included media player.

Check your memory card type and the sizes available and prices of these.

If the specs really say "Handheld PC", then they may well mean a
device that runs Windows CE, but is _not_ a Pocket PC. Microsoft has
promulgated specs for several "platforms"; each is a combination of
Windows CE, applications, and hardware. The Pocket PC is one such
platform. The Handheld PC is another. Software that targets Handheld
PC may well run on nothing else (depends on how it's built). Support
for Handheld PCs is waning.

If the specs really mean handheld running some version of "big"
Windows (95, 98, ME, 2000, XP), then you _may_ be able to use any
desktop or laptop running one of those operating systems. If the
software requires some specialized hardware and/or software (like pen
support), then your choices will be more restricted.

(I hope you got a better answer by now; for various reasons, I've been
away from newsgroups for a few weeks.)
