Yesterday, I updated the latest critical Win98 patches (they were security
related) and since then having a strange problem ... here it is.

As Windows begins loading, I can see and move the mouse and the hour glass.
As soon as the loading gets over, the MOUSE DISAPPEARS and if I touch any key
on the keyboard, the machine reboots (as if I hit the reset button)

I now completely unable to use my PC. Any will be greatly appreciated

as an initial fix you can remove kb891711.exe from the
windows startup list. You may be able to do a boot either in
safe mode or by avoiding any startup programs loading by
holding down the control key during bootup - this will ask
you to confirm each instruction during bootup - just keep
saying yes till you are asked about starting kb891711.exe -
then answer no. Then if you get windows loaded - Start - Run
- msconfig - startup tab and untick the kb891711.exe entry.
This is at your own risk.

I had similar problems after installing the same update. Windows 98 gets to
the point of loading the desktop and then goes to the blue screen of death.
I was able to use abackup image file to restore 98 to an earlier state before
the security update was installed. Windows 98 then worked fine. Each time I
installed the 891711 update Windows would again crash. Aviod the update at
all costs. If you have a backup, you should ge back to before the update was
run.

The update works fine on my machine -- 98SE with Fat32 and XPPRO with NTFS on
two seperate hard drives. There is no reason to avoid this update because it
is a CRITICAL UPDATE and so all users need to work with computer people to
patch their computers and networks before the hackers are able to reverse
engineer these new updates and target the 9x users who have not applied this
update.

There is a reason to avoid it for those that can't get Windows to load. If
the machine BSOD's only with the update on boot and renders it unusable,
then uninstalling/notusing/avoiding the update is recommended. The reason
for the BSOD's then needs to be determined whether it be an issue with the
update, software/hardware or a combination of both.

It may be that you, myself and others have no issue with the update but
others do and if their machine is needed yet won't run with it, then it
should not be installed until a definitive cause/solution is found.

Perhaps the suggestion by Robert may be best in disabling the CU from
loading in the startup.

From what I see the update creates a folder C:\Windows\SytemKB891711
In that folder is KB891711.exe dated 02/22/05 and Q891711.dll dated
02/18/05

Now this is a first I've seen where an update has created it's own folder,
exe and dll in System. Perhaps someone can explain what's up with that.

I'm hoping MS has not decided to obliterate Win98 with KB891711.exe in
retribution for Dan's letter to MS! Anyway...

I find all is well with KB891711.exe activated, UNTIL I've gone online.
Then, IE or any URL will BSOD when clicked. Before that, the URLs will
work from TIFs. After going online, URLs again begin to work, after
killing KB891711.exe with Ctrl-Alt-Del. Can it be something NetZero is
doing?

Possibly, NetZero may be involved. PCR, didn't you have trouble installing
other updates some time ago or am I mistaken? Also, have you tried to run
Mozilla Firefox and see if that browser will run without any trouble?

Had you tested with msconfig yet by disabling Startup items?
Leave the KB checked to run along with only the necessary items for Windows
to run and reboot.
If all works then we know it's not the kb alone and maybe another process.
Recheck half the items in the Startup group and reboot.
If all is well, then the answer remains as above. If all goes awry again,
then we know it's something in the half that was rechecked and you need to
start unchecking either half of those and rebooting or unchecking one by one
and rebooting until you find the problem source.

You know the drill, but until we can find out if there's an app in common
causing it or not, no one can point a finger.

There are other apps that activate after I've gone online, like certain
McAfee tentacles & Rnaapp.exe. Also, some of them already activated may
want to do more after detecting a connection. No, haven't any other
browser.

Great advice, Brian. PCR, would you be willing to download and install
Mozilla Firefox just to try it out and see if the problem has to do solely
with IE with your NetZero ISP. Also, maybe someone can burn Mozilla Firefox
to cd and you can install it that way if you are unable to download it.
Finally, do you have an alternative way to connect to the Internet other than
NetZero to see if this ISP is the cause?

I don't use NetZero. Cable. (I have a wireless adapter in my laptop
though) On my Win98se this update completely stopped FireFox. FF goes to a
blue screen "fatal exception 0D" as soon as you start it, and W98 terminates
FF. I have removed the update using the uninstall software option. If this
vulnerability has been around since W98 and hasn't been exploited yet, then
it would seem to be pretty low risk. There must be far worse risks that
using FireFox instead of IE will defeat.

I've confirmed that the KB891711 update causes my 98SE to crash each time I
load it. I get a BSOD upon booting up after the login screen. Thus I can't
troubleshoot anything in 98 as it renders mine unable to load. I have now
restored from an image file 4 times. Is there any way to disable this
critical update on Windows Update?

When your system is starting, press the F8 key repeatedly when you see
your bios messages appear on the screen. This will let you see the
boot menu.

What you want is to start the system with the command (DOS) prompt.

That should get you a "C:\" prompt (or c:\windows prompt).

At the prompt, change to the directory c:\windows\system\kb891711

There is a file there called kb891711.exe

Rename it to something like kb891711.ex_

The re-start your system. Windows will then not be able to load that
file at startup.

Otherwise, if your computer still doesn't work, then start it in safe
mode and un-install the recent security updates.
