My system:
Intel Pentium III 1GHz 133MHz FSB, 256K Cache
SY-7VCA-E Soyo Socket 370 ATA 100 ATX
TOSHIBA 16X DVD
Plextor CD/RW
Western Digital 40.GB 7200 ata100 HD
Western Digital 20.GB 7200 ata100 HD
ATI ALL-IN-WONDER 128 PRO AGP 32MEG
SOUND BLASTER LIVE! VALUE
Mitsubisi 19" CRT
USB Linksys Wireless-B Network Adapter
Win98se

I started having start up problems a few weeks ago. The computer would
start, then beep once, which I know is good. The Win98 splash screen would
come on then I'd hear a click and the screen would go black before my desk
top could show. The screen just stays black. If I push the restart button,
the process would start all over but I'd get a screen asking me to choose
which mode I wanted to start up in. I always chose regular mode, and the
machine would continue to load suscessfully. I did not want to go into safe
mode, because the drivers I have installed are the ones that work best
together. Newer ATI drivers caused problems. Yesterday the machine died. No
beep and black screen. The fans are all running and green lights flash on my
DVD, CD, and floppy indicating power to them.
My first step was to replace the very old 250watt power supply that came
with the case with a new Antec 350watt. Again no post beep and black screen.
I know that no beep can mean power supply or mo or processor.
QUESTION : Is there anyway I can rule out processor or MO, before I make my
next purchase? I have found a TYAN "Tomcat i815T" i815ep Chipset
Motherboard for Intel Socket 370 CPU at NewEgg for $44.50. I would purchase
it if I knew that my CPU was OK.

Forgot to mention that putting in a Win98 boot floppy does nothing. Still,
no beep and no screen. Before the system died, but while I was having start
up problems; the system ran fine after I got it up and running. No problems
with video card or anything.

Remove all hardware/adapters that are not necessary for the operation of
Windows.
Boot the machine.

If the machine boots you know it's something removed.
If it doesn't, it's time for the process of elimination of what's left all
the way to the mobo.

It's not necessary to boot an O/S or get to safe mode for what you need -
simply getting the BIOS information screen would be adequate to demonstrate
that the CPU is working. Therefore, remove everything you don't need -
including hard disk drives. Unplug all external devices, and replace the
video adapter card with the simplest one you can find. In addition to the
video, you need a keyboard and some RAM (and even the keyboard isn't
strictly necessary). If you can't get the BIOS information screen with this
arrangement, and if you have already replaced the power supply, then you
have effectively narrowed it down to motherboard or CPU. Unfortunately,
narrowing it down beyond this is difficult. One option is to move the CPU
to another machine, but if that's not practical then the only viable option
is to swap in that other motherboard and see what happens.
