I have here a used USB 2.0 3.5 inch USB enclosure with HD installed. I
connected to an XP machine and it works fine but won't read/write from my 98
SE machine. I have drivers installed for another USB drive so this new
unknown make is visible as drive D:

There is little info on the box. On the bar code:

USB 2.0 3.5" Enclosure
HYU2 3.5 0901015

USB 2.0 480 Mbps High Speed Data Transfer
USB 1.1, USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394a/IEEE139b Supported

I have not been successful with Google so far.

Anyone have some hints for suitable drivers?

The generic Win98 driver for USB-1.1/2.0 drives is:
http://www.archos.com/download/dri [...] T_5_04.EXE

But backup the Registry first (Start -- Run...):

scanregw /backup

so if this driver will mess your system -- you will have 4 days to
restore your Registry: boot in Command Prompt Only mode (hold down left
Ctrl key, release it when Startup Menu will appear, and select this
item), and type:

scanreg /restore

(note: in this case there is no letter 'W' in the word "scanreg').
Select your backup by its date/time then. After restoring Registry, your
system will forget this driver.

How to install this driver:

Disconnect your USB drive, install the driver with all options, restart,
and connect USB-drive to computer. Allow Windows to find the driver
automatically then.

If your motherboard has USB-2.0 ability -- you ought to install USB-2.0
driver for motherboard (Win98 does not have native USB-2.0 support),
otherwise you'll dramatically slow down this drive: say, 2GB will be
copied 55 min, compared to 5 min if USB-2.0 driver is installed. But the
driver depends on the chipset manufacturer: so, SiS does not provide
USB-2.0 driver for Win98.

Thank you. Some good info you've provided. Will tuck that into my Win98 tips
file. I did get the drive to work finally with W98. Not sure why it refused
initially. I reconnected it to the XP system and formatted to Fat32.
Following that I had no trouble. Why that should make a difference I don't
know because I had formatted it with W98.
