How do I disable popups on my computer? I don't remember installing the
system.

Well......that is pretty vague.

There is a freebie program for popups......called Popup Stopper. I assume
it is still free. Use Google.

OTOH, I use Firefox as a browser and it totally prevents popups. Zone
Alarm can also do that, but perhaps only the Pro version.

So there are a few thoughts......and I trust that is what you were after.

Cheers......Heather

How about unchecking "WinPopup" in System Tools?

Harry.

Not that that is of any particular relevance to those running Win Me as
Win Me, in common with other Win 9x systems, has no Windows Messenger
service.

True. And does not work either in 2K, or XP. You have to open the registry
and delete the entry for it. Or, it keeps coming back, like a child long
emancipated by age.

And yet it has winpopup. I thought maybe I had copied it from Windows for
Workgroups but the files have the ME date and timestamp.

My message was in respect of the advice contained in the referenced URL
"http://www.cezeo.com/tips-and-tricks/disable-messenger/" which has no
relevance for those running Win Me since Win Me does not have the Windows
Messenger service.

If you want to stop receiving internet spam messages either uninstall
WinPopUp or if required for local network messages make sure that UDP
ports 135, 137, and 138 and TCP ports 135, 139, and 445 are blocked at
your firewall and/or router and not accepting messages from the net.

I'm sorry I didn't explain that I understood the difference in winpopup and
Windows Messenger Service. I was amused that winpopup in Win 9X is for
printer notification same as Messenger Service but XP has the spam problem.
