Hello,

I've heard that the iPAQ 1940 uses a non standard com port and that it is
not possible to use a serial GPS connection. I assume that the only solution
is to use a Bluetooth GPS. Can anybody confirm that this is correct?

Thanks for your help,

Chris

correct...actually it does not have a serial port.

The 1940 has no serial port so BT is your only option and the better
solution anyway for most uses.

Thanks guys for taking the time to reply and clarify the situation for me.
Time to search for a BT GPS!

There are many, but I thought I'd throw this out since it is a fairly new
item. http://www.delorme.com/bluelogger/

>> Delorme BlueLogger <<

Great find Sven!

Wow... this has two important benefits

Low cost... there is an even lower bundle price at;

http://www.delorme.com/bluelogger/order.asp

for $149 that includes _either_ StreetAtlas PC or PDA software... means
the hardware unit part of the package is being sold for approximately $100

It contains _logging_ capabilities as a standalone and in an tiny
package 2.7 oz with battery... want to know where your pet (or teenager)
goes when they roam? ;-) afaik, none of the other bluetooth gps units
offer this capability, especially at this price.

Bev, I actually got this thing with the SA2005 and SA2005 HH bundle. Given
the SRP of those packages I can convince myself the GPS was $90 :) It even
comes with a charging cradle that will charge a second battery, like most of
the iPAQ PPC cradles do now. It comes with an AC and car charger, and the
connectors are the same as the iPAQs and the Dells, so third party power
should be a cinch. I've played with the GPS with Mapopolis and seems to
perform similarly to my Socket BT. I haven't loaded up all the Delorme
software yet, so haven't even tried the logging functions. Seems to be a
good buy even if you never use that though. I've only seen it in DeLorme
bundles though, same at www.earthmate.com, so you have to be willing to get
some new mapping software. So twist my arm :) Dave's iPaq has a decent
review of it.

A nice unit, rceently reviewed by us, see
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/delorme-blue-logger.php . This is
manufactured by Laedtek and is based on the ever popular 9537 albeit with
the added log functionality
..
I still personally prefer the Royaltek RBT3000 which has both PC and PPC
Client's for the Logger facility, see
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/royaltekrbt3000.php .

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that the logging is done in the
device itself... i.e. you can send the Bluelogger device on a trip by
itself with no pc or ppc in range and when the device returns, the trip
log info can then be downloaded.

May be on other BT devices, but have not seen a clear indication of this
capability.

>> price <<

What are the prices of other BT receivers that do not refelect software
costs? ...i.e. the receiver only to use with existing software.

I actually saw your review too, just remember'd Dave's. I believe they are
both link'd from Delorme's site. Bev, the Royaltek stores the log in the
device too. It seems to be around $198 with no mapping software and just the
car charger.

I for one will be pinging DeLorme about PPC logger management capability.

Don't get the comment or question. The Royaltek does the same. Stores 30000
points and the Delorme 50000 all on it's own. The Delorme requires the PC to
setup the logging and retrieve logs. Seems the Royaltek has a PPC
capability to do this as well.

<big grin> When I go there, all I get is European maps ...

They must have some way of figuring out where you are. Possibly
through IP address. That's kinda cool :-) It would be nice though to
get a US map though, never know when I might get to go there ...

We have the opposite problem. Even MS doesn't seem to think people travel.
They have Streets and Trip for North America and Autoroute for Europe. I
can't even buy Autoroute here and most European sites won't ship it to a US
address. I'm sure there is some legal reason for that, but it's annoying. I
got around it by getting Mapopolis. They sell both American and European
maps and they don't care who pays them. They are not shipping anything
anywhere, you download the maps. Very handy on my trip to Germany last
Christmas.

Yes both store the log within the device and can operate independently BUT
the Delorme requires a PC to download and replay the logfile whereas the
Royaltek has client apps that will run on a PPC and do the same so you can
replay a logfile on your PocketPC through a virtual Com Port and have this
logfile 'drive' any GPS app.

That's a pretty neat feature. Hopefully DeLorme will do something like that
for the PPC. It does seem like a more professionally targeted option though.
I don't figure that many regular consumers are going to need that.
